I had an add-on called Utility Box toolbar. It was installed but not active. It set my New tab to Ask.com. I removed the add-on & it got back to normal.

Its a same that Ask.com has to resort to this sort of deception to get people to their site. My advice to everyone is to stay away from anything that has to do with Ask.com. Its as bad as most virus'.

  1. Close Firefox
  2. Uninstall Ask Toolbar from Windows Control Panel
  3. launch Firefox again
  4. install the Search Reset Tool. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.

For further information, please read Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page.

Sorry, I don't think the Search Reset add-on will fix the NewTab page being changed to ask.com. And my crystal ball didn't detect that the "Owner" has the Ask Toolbar installed.

Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter.
Then verify that you'll be careful.

Type this in the Search at the top browser.newtab.url and then right-click that pref and select Reset. Restart Firefox.

hello the-edmeister - the search reset addon will take care of the browser.newtab.url setting too. i also agree with Waka_Flocka_Flame's assessment that the ask toolbar is likely at play here - especially since oracle is continuing with its disgraceful practice of bundling the adware as default option with its critical security updates...

could you go to firefox > help > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

I haven't needed to use that add-on for quite awhile. Looks like restoring newTabURL was added in version 0.2.,

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Firefox uses the about: protocol to access built-in about: pages that you can open via the location bar just like you open web pages.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Bei mir war das gleiche Problem. Ich habe in der Extras Menu unter "Erweiterungen" eine "New Tab" version gehabt, die search.ask.com aktiviert war. Ich habe das einfach entfernt, jetzt ist das Problem behoben. Eigentlich einfach, wenn man weiss wie.

I had the same problem and I didn't have any ask.com program installed, as far as I could see - at least no Toolbar. I tried each of the suggestions I found here. Finally I tried starting in safe mode, and the problem disappeared. Then I went to Add-ons on the Firefox button, and found something called New tab. I looked at it, and found that it was from ask.com. I removed it and the problem was gone. So I learnt something today; thank you

In firefox, go to tools, then add ons then on the left side click extensions. One of the extensions says new tab, disable or delete this. Close all browser windows then re open. This should make the situation go away.
