My Windows XP crached. I though it would be a great occasion to go to Windows 7 !

Fortunately, I have a backup of my disk, especially, the folder C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

When following the instructions provided in the support pages like this one : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile

this simple do not work!

I have been careful in closing FireFox before pasting the profile default folder from my XP backup, renaming the folder with the name of the default profile provided in the new Windows 7 forlder : C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

and when restarting Firefox, nothing happens ! no data restored, no password, no history, nothing!

I have even tryed to restore some files only like the 2 files for the password, but again, noting :(

Your quick help/feedback wil be much appreciated.

Best regards

Is the pathname to the user account data the same with Windows XP and Windows 7? Is the username the same?

Dear Finitarry,

the pathname to user accounts is not the same of cours, since I moved from XP to 7.

however, the user name is not the same. I have changed the user name from my old installation to the new one. Does this change any thing ?

and if yes, how can I do a turnaroud of this ?

Wrong folderset:
C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You want the path without Local Settings - strictly Application Data:
C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You should only restore the data that you really need like bookmarks and passwords.
Restoring a full profile can cause all kinds of problems and only works if you restore the profiles.ini file as well.

Dear the-edmeister

thank you for your feedback. To be sure I understand you well, could you please tell me what profiles folder to copy to which folder in the new installation ?

Best regards,

I would run Firefox to let it create a new profile in the new computer, then copy certain files from the old profile to the new one. You can find the profile if you let Firefox set it up, by clicking Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Profile button (or some name like that).

After several tests on different computer with different configurations (Windows XP / 7), it seems that my profile files are corrupted. However, I am not that sure. Is there any way to know it and/or to fix the files before reusing them?

Again, I have made some tests as you just mentioned by creating a new profile and transferring the files one group at a time as mentioned in the following page: https://support.mozilla.org/fr/kb/recuperer-donnees-importantes-ancien-profil

For example, I have started by copying the following two files to just recovery the passwords: - key3.db - signons.sqlite

Again, this does not work.

I am quite lost! Please help.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
  • Aide -> Informations de dépannage -> Répertoire de profil -> Ouvrir le dossier correspondant

Dear All,

any help please ? I need to restore my history and password.

I think after all the tests made, that my files are corrupted since I have tested on other computers and this do not work again.

Do you have a backup of the Firefox Profile Folder in Windows XP ?

  • C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Windows 7+ versions are hidden folders.

  1. Are you certain, beyond any doubt, that you are restoring those old files to the correct location?
  2. Any success in restoring only your Passwords? The two files named key3.db & signons.sqlite . If not, you may be placing those files in the wrong location.

As far as restoring browsing history, if Firefox was running when that PC crashed, chances are that the data files which contains the history and bookmarks is corrupt as a result of the crash while Firefox was open. Bookmarks are backed up automatically, so they can be restored with minimal loss, but browsing history isn't automatically backed up.

Have you tried a support forum in your native language for support help? I suspect something is getting lost in translation. I last studied French in grade school, like 55 years ago.

Dear cor-el

I don’t think I am using the wrong folders now. Here is a reminder of the:

  • Bulleted list item Source XP folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>.default

  • Bulleted list item Destination W7 folder:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>.default

Dear the-edmeister

  1. Numbered list item Yes, I am sure that I am using the correct location (please see my answer to cor-el above). If you see any mistake, please do not hesitate. Thanks.
  2. Numbered list item No success restoring only the Passwords as I have already explained in one of my posts above. And yes, I think I am placing the files in the correct locations, again, as explained above in the current post.

Finally, thank you for the suggestion to try a support forum in my native language. Here is then a last try. If you thing something is wrong or not clear in my message above, I will do it.

I am sorry for my poor English and again thank you for taking the time to try to answer my questions.

Best et look forward to reading you.

Looks like the correct folders to me. No idea why it didn't work, as long as the default Profile on WinXP was your active Profile.

If the passwords were working in IE and the files are not corrupted then copying the key3.db and signons.sqlite files to the current Firefox Profile Folder should work.
I've done this a lot of times and it has never failed to work.
Make sure that there aren't any other signons files present.

AshleyNY,

You're doing something wrong - I have done this hundreds of times without a problem.

Create another new Profile, and this time copy the contents of the old Profile folder into the new Profile folder (replacing the contents of the new Profile). DO NOT rename anything.
