When I open Firefox it c omes on along with a message that says:

"Browser settings change

An unknown change was detected on your browser's search settings:

____ Keep my current settings (this is automatically filled out
____ I am aware of this change and approve it"

The message will not go away no matter what I try. I have clicked on the second option (I am aware of this change and approve it) and click on the red and white x at the upper right-hand corner but it will not go away. When this message is on I cannot do certain tihings on my computer. Also, I cannot move the message out of the way.

This message does not come on with Internet Explorer. Thanks.

Hi,

Try the Firefox Safe Mode to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or use the Help menu item and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode" To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again. If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

If the problem persists in Safe Mode then it's probably a message from an external Windows program. Firefox usually doesn't have such types of messages.

Please create a screenshot of the message you're seeing by following the guide mentioned at How do I create a screenshot of my problem?.

Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the Browse... button below the Post your reply box. This will help us to visualize the problem.

You can also do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

I just solved this problem for my uncle who is using Windows 7 and had upgraded to Firefox 17.0.1. The problem is with the maintenance service program that is installed with Firefox. It is not a virus.

First, I deleted all Firefox related programs including the maintenance service program. If you are unfamiliar with Windows, under the Control Panel is a feature that allows you to remove programs. Then, I download the latest version of Firefox from their website. During the installation, I chose the custom installation, not the "typical" installation. When it came time to select whether to include the maintenance service to automatically update your version of Firefox, I selected "No." The installation finished and there was no annoying window popping up warning of a change in the browser settings.

The maintenance service is used to download and install updates on Windows without the need to confirm this via an UAC alert.
If you allow that program in Windows and in your security software then there shouldn't be any problem with it.

I followed the instructions but it did not work. However, the message did not show up right away. It showed up when I wanted to close the window on Firefox and all the other windows.

I have given up using Firefox. The message is much too annoying. Thanks.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

It's all very easy, just go to the Help in the top left of Mozilla and select Trouble Shooting Information and then select Reset Firefox. When it has finished and restarted I went to Tools/Options/Advanced/Updates and selected the Check for updates but let me choose button. This will save all your Info to your computer as as file and will reset Firefox with no popup rubbish. No need for all malware checks and deleting Firefox
