mailto link results in "File not found."

I cannot get mailto links to work from Firefox. When I check the application associated with mailto in the Options, it says "Thunderbird" as I intend (and as works correctly by default in Google Chrome). When I click on a mailto link in Firefox, Firefox produces an error message (in a new tab) that starts (for example) as follows:

File not found 

         Firefox can't find the file at mailto:?subject=Paperless Post Birthday Cards! &body=http://bit.ly/9oi2CJ.


This symptom is different from any others I could find which are reported in association with mailto links. Any pointers on how to fix this would be appreciated.
