I fix this problem. I uninstalled Adobe Reader X and installed Adobe Reader 9.4.

A few questions:

  1. Are you downloading a PDF and then trying to view it or are you trying to view it in Firefox?
  2. Do you have links to pages/PDFs where you see this problem?
  3. If you completely uninstall Adobe Reader X and reinstall it, does it go away? (I have a few reports of it being a bad update)

We have a few people here at Mozilla who are trying to figure out this problem but we can't seem to reproduce it with a set up similar to yours. More information would be really helpful!

Thanks.

Could what is on this forum thread help you?

In answer to Cww:

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled yet. I am visiting https://courses.worldcampus.psu.edu/public/diagnostics/Acro_Test.pdf and wanting to view it in a web page.

I have this problem too.

I have Firefox 3.6.15 (Yahoo Edition 1.7) and Adobe Reader X on Windows XP.

The URL https://www.cerritoscenter.com/_downloads/lyric.pdf won't show up in the Firefox browser, but it shows up in the Google Chrome browser just fine.

Therefore, the problem is with the Firefox browser not being able to handle Adobe Reader X.

Since so many people have this problem and it has been going on for so long, it seems like the developers at Mozilla couldn't care a less about us, or they can't fix it.

What is your opinion?

Some says that the solution is disabling 'Enable protected mode startup' check in Reader X 's preference menu. But I think the better solution is to execute 'Select Default PDF Handler' in the menu, and choose Reader X for it. I solved the problem in this way.

Maybe the cause of problem is the PDF Handler for previous version of Reader that remains in browser plugin settings.

I had the same problem with my computer running Windows 7 Professional, Firefox v 3.6.16 (having Adobe Acrobat plugin 10.0.0.396) and Adobe Reader X v 10.0.0. I couldn't open/view a pdf file in firefox, but if I save a pdf file and then open, it worked.

I fixed it by repairing the Adobe Reader X installation (Control Panel --> Uninstall a program --> Change --> Repair Installation errors......)

Hope this information is useful.

I fixed this problem with a different solution entirely. I disabled the PDF downloader extension on Firefox 4. I went to Tools, Add-Ons and clicked on Extensions then disabled the PDF downloader. I restarted Firefox 4 and the problem was gone.

I am running Windows 7, Firefox 4 and Adobe X.

An example of a PDF is http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/krs/061-00/645.PDF

If I download and then access all is fine.

If I try to access via Firefox the system jams.

I tried repairing the adobe installation per Umairzh's suggestion (see above) but that did not help.

For me, it's working if I remove "Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate" from the HTTP header.

Well, I do not use Firefox. If I select a PDF file from Windows....will not open. Works just fine on another machine. Both have XP SP3. The problem is at Adobe! Glad to see I am not the only one with the problem!

I suddenly had the same problem with Reader X. I uninstalled and reinstalled it at least three times and all to no positive effect. I finally uninstalled it and downloaded Foxit Reader. Seems to work just fine. Adobe obviously has some problems with this latest version.

Four weeks of problems with Adobe Reader 10. Jams up computer and I have to turn off power every time. This on a laptop with Windows 7. My Acer PC which has Windows XP is ok. Perfect, in fact. Only way I can use Adobe Reader on Windows 7 is to use an earlier version of Reader which works correctly. I have tried everything in the book to fix this for a month. (Well, I think, everything!) What IS the problem??

For me, the issue happened on both Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox. When I unchecked "Enable Protected Mode at startup", the issue went away for me in both IE and Firefox. Since it happened in both IE and Firefox, I would say that this is out of Mozilla's control.
