In IE I can normally open any .xls or .doc file from any website. In Firefox I can't. I just get the message Transfer error and there stays that transfer is impossible.

Firefox doesn't display .xls or .doc file types, as they aren't an internet type of file. They're a word processing type of file. OpenOffice has a Mozilla browser plugin that will allow those file types to be viewed using OpenOffice in a Firefox tab, similar to how the Adobe Reader plugin displays PDF file using Adobe Reader in a Firefox tab. OpenOffice with the Mozilla plugin is about the closest you're going to get to being able to view those file types in Firefox. If Microsoft offered an Office plugin for Firefox, those files could be displayed by Office in a Firefox tab the same as OpenOffice does with Firefox.
