Several of you mentioned that Google Chrome self-installs. Well, it doesn't. What you actually downloaded was a file and script containing the information to add a repository your package manager. Then the package manager opened to the new repository and you clicked install. This is when you actually got chrome. Firefox is giving you an install file since that's what it thinks you want. To use it, extract it somewhere then find the setup script (a .sh file I think) and run it. They assume if you want a repository that you will get it from your distributor. Unfortunately they tend to be very slow in moving to the next release. They usually don't even try, just putting out the new one when the next OS release comes out so they can test it for compatibility. Also, its much easier on them and there servers to put the tar.bz2 file up than maintain at least four different repositories. (two for .deb (32 and 64bit), two for .rpm (32 and 64bit) and maybe more for other linux-based os's.) The tar.bz2 file will run of most as is. Here's the deal, with Linux you figure out how to do it yourself or wait like the rest of us. I personally have no found a repository for the current stable release of FF5 (released today) and I doubt I will for a few days. However, there are many different repositories that can be easily added with very easy step by step instructions. Google it. You won't be disappointed. Also, learn terminal. Yes, it's a command line and the windows one is hard to learn. Linux's Terminal is easy in comparison. (And it supports copy-paste for those nice step-by-step instructions) Plus, you can show off to your friends and they will think you're awesome.
