lost the bookmarks from toolbar and other

blogugogu

After problems with loading the current Firefox session, I seem to have retrieved my bookmarks (I cannot be certain all of them are there), except the Bookmarks toolbar and Other bookmarks folders are empty. I have a recent backup, but when I try to import the json file, it wipes out all bookmarks - I have to reboot to see them again. If I had them in html format I might try to manually add the missing bookmarks. Even better, maybe there is a way to merge the current and backed-up bookmarks. But I don't want to make things even worse. Any advice that certainly will work? Thank you for your help. Incidentally, sometimes the bookmarks won't load, and I have to reboot, sometimes several times, to see them again. How might I avoid this?

Could you try the bookmark import in a clean testing profile first? The behavior when the bookmark system gets presumably corrupted after the restore doesn't look good.

You should have several timestamps available among the bookmark backups — have you tried different dates what results they yield?

(My thinking is: if the restore works into a clean profile, you could then manage potential merges there — only bringing over the newly added ones from the original profile, or — export both profiles into HTML and manually edit that to your liking to then import it back.)

If you're working with the JSONLZ4 backup files from the profile folders, you can use https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html to load / decompress / check / preview / verify / export etc. the files to pick the right one with the content you're looking for.
