At launch, very random times maybe, Thunderbird 144 will hang, HangType Cross-process per Windows 11 ...... (bug1998531)
Hi
I am using the latest TB build, 144.0.1and have only the British dictionary as an extension, no themes.
Occasionally TB will hang when launched and the Windows event viewer will show this....(added image)_
The friendly xml log within the event viewer...
AppName thunderbird.exe
AppVersion 144.0.1.0 ProcessId 0x6234 StartTime 0x1dc51956edcf231 TerminationTime 5 ExeFileName C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe ReportId f3ad169f-c629-4357-85ae-7db29d0541f1 PackageFullName PackageRelativeAppId
HangType Cross-process
as noted, this only happens when the email client is launched and will not happen each time. I have tried without the dictionary, as it is so random it can take a while to occur, but that does not seem to make a difference.
I am using Windows 11 25h2
Thanks

I suspect it may be when you have a new e-mail that it is trying to notify you about. A recent Windows 11 update made Windows notifications unstable and Thunderbird hangs until Windows says it successfully launched one (which it doesn't). Try turning off "Use the system notification" (ideally before entering your mailbox password if possible) setting in Thunderbird... close it gracefully then start it back up again.

Thanks. I use just the defender that comes with Windows 11, nothing exotic.
This is running on a fresh install of Windows 11, installed with 25h2. I removed completely Thunderbird and then installed it fresh. Still, often, it will hang when starting it. It is the only app that does so, in the way described. Sometimes I just close it via task manager, but then I do not get the chance to submit a bug report.
If I try Outlook as the client, all is well. That is not what I want though.
The added screenshot shows TB running within task manager, when it is hung.

Thanks, when it does happen for me it is only at the time of launch when Thunderbird is checking for mail. As I use IMAP type services it will always synchronise with the server and so that can't be stopped.
I have now turned off th enotification folder, due to what you have suggested.
Many thanks.
TB has continued to work fine with the notifications turned off. I am fine with that, didn't really need them anyway, especially the rather intrusive Windows style notifications.
So far, it has been most stable with zero hangs when started. The vast majority of time TB would not generate a bug report due to this hang type issue.
