What is the orange dot in the message list
There is an mystery icon like an orange dot that appears alongside certain messages in the message list. I have attached a picture. Can anyone explain what it indicates.
I can tell you that it is NOT any of the following.
- Unread message indicator (these are shown in bold and have a green dot in another column)
- Junk mail indicator
- Threading indicator

The orange dot (rhomb) on the left means '"this is a new message". Since it is unread it is also displayed in bold and has the green "unread" dot. If you restart TB the same message loses its orange dot but still is in bold with a green dot if it hasn't been read in the meantime.

I think it means there is a new message in a folder you haven't looked at yet. If you select a different folder in the folder pane, and then go back to the first folder, the orange rhombus is gone, while the message is still in bold, meaning it's still unread.
Wow. Thanks mapenzi and christ1 for the answer. That's something I had not appreciated. Thunderbird has a concept of a "New" message that is distinct from an "Unread" message.
Supplementary question. Where is this explained anywhere in the Thunderbird documentation? I couldn't find it.
