My default search engine is startpage, but I have to type something in and have the search fail, then it takes me to the startpage home so that I can actually search.

Hmm, I don't know why the search fails. How did you add Startpage? Did you use an add-on like

or did you build your own search engine using the steps in
Manage my default search engines in Firefox for Android => "Add search engine" section
