I cannot update chrome on the phone Im temp using, due to repair on newer mobile. So i have down loaded firefox but Im not able to use search engine just yet. Why is this?

What happens when you try to search from inside Firefox for Android? Is there a specific error message?
As you are entering your search query, you should be able to tap the "G" icon at the left of the address bar and change to Bing or DuckDuckGo as a temporary workaround if Google isn't usable.
