Firefox gets lost

Firefox goes to eBay Portugal instead of eBay USA. In order to complete a specific task, I had to use Edge browser to get there. Why does it do that? How do I fix it?

That's strange!

Do you use a VPN with an "exit node" in Portugal? Many sites will use the IP address of your connection, and with a VPN, this is determined by your VPN server selection.

Is your Firefox set to request Portuguese language on web pages? For more information on where this would be set on the Settings page, see: Choose display languages for multilingual web pages .

Assuming not, if you try in a private window (Ctrl+Shift+P) does the same thing happen? The purpose of trying in a private window is:

  • Avoid using previously cached files shared among regular windows
  • Avoid sending previously saved cookies shared among regular windows
  • Avoid the effects of add-ons that you haven't specifically allowed to run in private windows

Any difference?

Hello jscher,

My VPN exit node is on New York City. It’s the Mozilla VPN. My language is set to English.

I just tried a private window and indeed it went to English USA. Finally!! Although I won’t be shocked if it move to Portuguese the next time I try it. I did search for this problem in Google, and it comes up surprisingly often. So why just eBay????

Hopefully you guys will be able to sort this? I wonder if there’s something funky with the eBay Web server? Maybe its DNS entry is not correct? It seems odd that this problem exhibits only with eBay.

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill, maybe at some point you used a search result link that was for a European server and that somehow stuck?

If you want to test after clearing cache and the site's cookies in a regular window, here are the steps:

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache (only select Cached web content, don't clear all cookies and site data)

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies.

In that same area of the Settings page, click "Manage Data" and Remove for ebay .com and ebaystatic .com (and if I'm forgetting any other eBay domains, those too).

Then try visiting eBay in a new tab to see whether the cleaner start helps with this problem.

There was one cookie; I deleted it; and Fire Fox went to the correct location. Whew!

I will try again tomorrow and see whether I am still connected to eBay USA. I can't imaging how this happened? Any ideas? Sure would like to protect against this.

Thanks, Bill

I'd be speculating. But at least you know where they store that in case you need to clear it again.
