Hi Vik, that's called the Sidebar. And once you know that, you can find the Ctrl+B keyboard shortcut and other methods of access. See: Use the Firefox Sidebar to access bookmarks, history, passwords and synced tabs.

The suggestions given did not help. Random drosophila melanogaster like key strokes eventually recovered the bookmark icon after multiple restarts. But the problem is solved.
