When an extension is removed is anything left behind
For the purposes of maintaining a clean profile.

If you uninstall an extension properly via the Add-ons page then its data should be removed unless you have chosen to keep it (there are extensions.webextensions.keep prefs on the about:config page). If you remove the extension by removing the file in the profile folder then this cleanup obviously is not possible. If you would reset all prefs then extensions.webextensions.uuids gets lost and this means that the extension won't be able to find its data in storage/default/moz-extension+++<UUID>.

I have found left over files in my profile from addons that were removed years before.
So there is no mechanism to assure this doesn't happen, or clean things up? To avoid possible profile corruption from bad stuff left behind?
