When starting to type an email address in a login box on, e.g., amazon, Firefox produces a drop-down list of suggested completions using common email domains such as gmail.com and yahoo.com. I never use any of these and want to either suppress the suggestions entirely or customise the list to display domains which I actually use.

Not user of Linux but one should clear the cache/history if those are showing up is because one has a gmail or yahoo email that they used the browser to login to. AFAIK, I know those shows up because one has to login to those site for the browser to cache them otherwise they wouldn't show up. If you want to block such login suggestions then one needs to find a Addon or userChrome.css edit that will do that configuration if one exists for that.
