The latest update to Thunderbird on Ubuntu has some issues.
Loading the TASK pane takes up to 20 seconds - the previous release was instant. There is a noticeable delay when changing directories. I have repaired all directories and tried to use the previous version of TBird but the profile is not accepted. Have also run without add-ons etc and this makes no difference. Once the task pane has loaded it behaves normally and subsequent loading is instant as it was with the previous version. This is not a real issue but I am wondering if there is an underlying problem somewhere.

Did you check the system activity with something like htop, and Thunderbird activity manager ?

Hello
I don't see your problem with Kubuntu 22.04 but not sure if it's the same version: I use apt for Thunderbird, currently at 102.4.2, while if I was using flatpak I would be at 102.5.0....
I'm on 102.4.2 as well. It may be a co-incidence and not the release so will keep looking. Thank you.
I wonder now if you are using a remote calendar ? I'm not, if it is the case for you some caching strategy could be the cause.
There is no remote calendar and when I checked that all add-ons were still disabled I noticed that after loading the Add-on Manager pane there was a delay when switching between the different headings! There is also an occasional hang whilst typing email text (as if it being held in a buffer for a few seconds) but no other software has this sort of input delay. It feels like TBird has a chunk of background processing which interferes with main functions. I have just found the --allow-downgrade parameter so I can use my profile with a previous version of TB - so maybe that is the way forward.

Activity manager showed expected mail movements but htop showed heavy usage. During the 20 s loading the task pane it was at 100%. Rather heavy for reading a few text files so I deleted (rather a lot of) 'completed' tasks leaving only the uncompleted and hey presto! It seems to have worked. After reloading TB the task pane appears instantly - as before - with no excessive loading. Fait accompli! Not sure where tasks are held but maybe some index has been overloaded, or a number limit exceeded but it seems to be working. Possibly a coincidence? New release just when a file overflowed? Thank you for your help.
