I reinstalled Firefox and made sure that I had unticked the data and history boxes, and declined the search suggestions. Nevertheless, the first attempt at entering a search immediately called up millions of the things. At Chrome, I have learned a sequence of eight clicks, whereby I can, for just that one search, avoid those hideous suggestions. If I could have a no-click option at Firefox, I would stay here. Otherwise, can you tell me how to uninst... no, I can first have another look in Windows settings. Looked through the C drive, but I recall now there is an "uninstall programs" facility in Windows. So, if you are able to tell me how to switch off the suggestions, I will stay at Fireofox. If not, I won't. I can remember a Google (or Chrome) person talking on TV, about 15 yrs ago, about this new thing they had (search suggestions) that everyone would love. Four or five seconds into his talk, I knew that I hated it, and have never moved a millimeter away from that position.

I realised as I was posting - or just after - that this was a public forum, not a help desk. So my tone in the OP is perhaps a little strange. Basically, instead of: "Can you tell me...", Can anyone tell me... Meanwhile, the problem has sort of fixed itself. Apparently, it was in unticking the box "search," for what to inculde on the search page, before I came here for the OP, that I got rid of the search box in the centre of the page, leaving only the omnibox (?), where - joy of joys - there appear no search suggestons. A simple expedient, in the end, but it would be good if people knew about it. I would never have guessed - although I sort of did, I suppose - that that was how to get rid of them. Meanwhile, I also notice that there seems to be no way of deleting the line devoted to bookmarks. The "manage" link doesn't offer the obvious "no bookmarks" option. That is characteristic of the single biggest failure by internet platform providers to the general public - failure to always offer the single option, to toggle on/off - no matter how useful they think their whizz-bang offering is. Anyone remember the "charms" on Windows 8? They've long gone to God... poor God.
