If you know what was saved, you may be able to get help here. Normally, all Thunderbird files are in c:\users\(yourID)\appdata\roaming\thunderbird. If you have the contents of that folder, you have everything you need. If the people installing new drive can advise of whether all or part of that are available, we can reconstruct your email account.

If you or the people fixing Win10 computer created a backup of the 'Thunderbird' folder to an external drive: C:\Users\(yourID)\Appdata\Roaming\Thunderbird then they can be imported back into Thunderbird on either Win7 or Win10.

If the people fixing Win10 computer created a backup of the 'Thunderbird' folder : C:\Users\(yourID)\Appdata\Roaming\Thunderbird and later reinstalled it again, then after installing the actual Thunderbird program, it should locate all the info automatically.

If you have ever manually exported your address books as LDIF or .csv files and saved them to an external drive then they can be imported back into Thunderbird on either Win7 or Win10.

If you have ever used the addon 'ImportExportTools NG' to export folders as mbox files or export emails as .eml files or used the 'Export Profile' option and those exported files and folders were put onto an external drive then the data can be used and imported back into Thunderbird in both Win7 and Win10.

You're on the right track. The addressbook is a simple file. If you can access any of the old files, it's probably there. The file name is abook.sqlite. If you can find it, you can copy it and overwrite the existing file in the new Thunderbird. But be sure to do it when Thunderbird is not running.

i have an older version on an external hard drive from either March or feb of this year will that work

icopied the icon a and the folder to the external hard drive

Should work fine. The address book underwent conversion several years ago. If you found a copy of abook.sqlite, you should be okay.

Did you find everything, not just the addressbook? If you found the profile, it may also have old messages.

because of this reason I did copy and print them but some were added after i printed them out i have them or at least some of thm but manually doing that will take weeks

I'm a bit confused. If you have the Thunderbird folder (it probably ended in something like "...default', then you may not have to enter anything.

If you managed to save the profile folder, it will have account info, all messages (assuming you use POP setup), and addressbook - everything from the date it was last used. The basic steps are: 1. install Thunderbird. This process creates a dummy profile. 2. AFTER the install, then copy in your profile (although I'm not sure you have it). 3. then, when starting Thunderbird, it will prompt to create an email account (because, by default, it is running with the dummy (empty) profile. At that prompt,

 a. click the 'home' tab in upper left,
 b. then right-click and activate 'menu bar'
 c. then click help>more troubleshootinginformation
 d. then scroll down left pane to 'profiles' and click 'about:profiles'
and you should see your profile listed to select.

But I still have no idea what you do have.

This is a lot easier than you may think. You really only need to transfer one folder - it is the 'Thunderbird' folder located in the 'Roaming' folder and it will swap over everything in one go.

Currently in Win7 you will have this:

  • C:\Users\(yourID)\Appdata\Roaming\Thunderbird

You say it is running up to date version, so keep it up to date.

When the Win10 computer is returned, you will probably need to install Thunderbird program. So install exactly the same version you are running on Win7. Run first time so it auto creates all default folders and then exit Thunderbird - do not create account or anything.

On Win7 - You can locate the 'profile name' folder via Thunderbird and then go up the directory to the 'Roaming Folder - see image below OR if you know how to access 'Appdata' go to it directly - I've added another image showing how to use 'search' to get the 'Appdata' folder. Access the 'Roaming' folder - C:\Users\(yourID)\Appdata\Roaming

Either way - Exit Thunderbird before you copy the 'Thunderbird' folder. Copy the 'Thunderbird' folder to external drive.

On Win10 - You can locate the 'profile name' folder via Thunderbird and then go up the directory to the 'Roaming Folder - see image below OR if you know how to access 'Appdata' go to it directly. - I've added another image showing how to use 'search' to get the 'Appdata' folder.

Access the 'Roaming' folder - C:\Users\(yourID)\Appdata\Roaming

Either way - Exit Thunderbird before you do the following:

In the 'Roaming' folder - Delete the default 'Thunderbird' folder Then paste in the copied 'Thunderbird' folder - thus replacing the new empty 'Thunderbird' with the 'Thunderbird' from Win7 which contains everything. Then start Thunderbird.

See images below as guide.

Mary, If it is just one IMAP account, I suggest you just start fresh. that is because all IMAP messages are on the server and you have lost none of them. Once you recreate the account information, all your mail will appear. All you need to do is copy in the abook.sqlite to profile (when Thunderbird is not running) and you'll be set. david
