Sync imap folders
I have an office computer, a laptop and a smartphone, all sending/receiving email via imap. The laptop has not been used for a couple months. When I turned it on today it showed only old messages and would not sync with the server. How can i force it to sync and show my recent messages? Thanks.

selecting the folder should be sufficient, or clicking the down arrow on the "get messages" and selecting "get all new messages" or pressing shift + F5
Thanks Matt. I had already done that and found that it downloaded all the messages to my local disk instead of syncing with the server, so I was badly confused. Re-thinking the issue, I remembered that my server host had changed some of the settings awhile back. I updated the settings on the office machine but did not do so for this laptop. Once updated, all is well. So it was operator error, not a T'bird issue at all. Thanks for tweaking my brain.
My IMAP folders are now synced but in the process a new problem was created. Somehow all of my messages were downloaded from the server to my local disk. I had hoped they were copied and left on the server but no such luck. Now I can access messages only by this computer but not with my phone or office computer. Then I hoped I could drag and drop them back to the server using the T'bird message list. Again no luck.
Is there any means to upload messages back to the server that were inadvertently downloaded?

I'm not going to guess what that means. More details, please.

@Christ1, you understand that my messages were inadvertently downloaded from my IMAP Inbox to my local disk, so they are available only from this computer, right? I would like to get them back into my IMAP Inbox to make them available from other devices.
If I want to move messages from my Inbox to some other folder, I can simply drag and drop them, whether Local to Local, IMAP to IMAP, or IMAP to Local, using the folder list in T'bird. However, when I tried to drag messages from my Local Inbox to my IMAP Inbox, nothing happened.
Can you help me upload these messages, to restore them to my IMAP Inbox on the server? Thanks!
Avoid the drag'n drop method, and don't try to upload a large no. of messages at once. Instead select the messages to be uploaded - right-click a selected message - Move To. Select the destination folder of the IMAP account.
Make sure to have a full backup of your Thunderbird profile before starting to mess with it. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
Upload message in smaller batches, and not all at once. Start with a single one to test.
Oops, need to revise . . .

Yes indeed, I tried moving a single message by Drag'n'Drop from Local Inbox to the IMAP Inbox without success. After reading Christ1's post earlier today, I tried his method. Both "Move to" and "Copy to" are unavailable, whether by Right-click or via the Message menu. Hold the mouse pointer over either of those and the sub-menus do no open. However, when I tried D'n'D again it worked, so I moved several of the most important messages that way. Some actually moved, others just copied for no apparent reason. Some still failed to move or copy, again for no apparent reason. When a file did move, a green bar flashed momentarily at the bottom of the screen and the message count in the destination folder added one.
Well, this inconsistency is somewhat frustrating so I have quit for now, will try again later. Thanks for the help. I think I will get it eventually. I will report progress and then close this topic if all is well.
As of my last post, a couple hours ago, I had restored a dozen or so files to my IMAP folder. Since then I have tried several times to move additional files, without success. D'n'D worked for a brief time but no more. The Right-click and Message-menu methods remain unavailable to me. Frustrating.
