Hi,

Regarding Thunderbird emails.

I have set up several newsdesk emails for a news domain. These emails are on the circulation list of many organisations and it is important that they are all received.

For some reason, emails from some of these (government bodies and other organisations) are going straight into a folder marked Spam. As a result, some of these bodies are no longer sending their press releases at all.

I cannot find anything that I can do to stop this happening.

The email provider is Rackspace via Cloudways. I have checked with them and they say their setup is functioning properly.

Help would be very welcome.

Working as you expect and working correctly is two different things is my guess.

See https://www.rackspace.com/en-au/email-hosting/webmail/spam-filtering

So right at the beginning you need to confirm your spam is not being identified there. Then we have these internet security suites (us oldies still call them anti virus) these products usually get involved in the spam and scam detection and often have components that hack Thunderbird to modify mail locations and status So again you will need to confirm that your product is not changing emails.

Then we get to Thunderbird. The simplest way to determine if Thunderbird thinks what is in the folder is spam is to look at the flag icon in the list.

This is a selection of mail in one of my spam folders.

None of that spam was placed there by Thunderbird. All of it was placed by my providers spam filter (in that case a google account)

The following image is from another spam folder

All of this mail was detected as spam by the Thunderbird junk filter. This fact is denoted by the orange and yellow spam flag. If your mail does not have that flag coloured then the mail was not placed there by Thunderbird.

So is your spam problem Thunderbird or elsewhere I think is the real question here for now.

Thanks Matt.

Using that method of assessment, the emails are placed in spam by Rackspace.

That still doesn't solve how I mark a sender as safe and stop them landing in spam in Thunderbird.

How do I do this please?

I have no idea, you will need to consult with them on how to opt out or white list senders.

If you view the account in webmail, there should be some indication of how to mark spam as not spam or to add senders to a safe-senders list. Often it's as simple as adding them to the webmail address book. Whether or not TB treats them as junk is a separate process depending on TB's Junk Settings, if they are active. You may find that the mail provider's spam controls are sufficient and disable TB's junk filters.
