Thanks to the huge efforts of the Mozilla team, I decided to ditch factory-installed Chrome for Firefox on my newish phone. Mostly pleased so far; for instance, tab organization much better than Google's recent lets-make-this-more-complicated.

However, there are two IMHO glaring omissions. Maybe they exist and I don't know how to enable them.

1. In History, I have found no way to search. Searching history in Firefox/Windows has existed for, what, a decade? Without that feature, History to me is pretty useless.

2. Reader View seems to do nothing. I expected it to remove ads, like it does on the Windows version. However, I've been on many sites with inline ads and clicking the Reader View icon seems to change the contents not at all.

Apologies if I can't see what's in front of my nose. OTOH maybe I need to file a couple defects. Thank you.

Hi

If int he Search options you have Search browsing history selected, search results will include results from your browsing history.

What is the address of the site where Reader View is not quite working correctly?

more options

Sorry for delay in following up.

1. Search History: I already had "search browsing history" enabled but did not realize how it works, thanks for revealing it to me. I'm used to the Win 10 Firefox which offers, in plain view, a Search box. I also find if I close the keyboard to see more results, the entire search is cancelled. So I guess it works, and I may get used to it, but wish it had been more obvious. I'll also mention that valuable screen space is consumed by a Delete History button. I'll bet it's used < 1% of the time a user looks at history.

2. One example of Reader View which, for me, does nothing: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/apr/04/marcella-recap-episode-one-anna-friel-takes-a-golf-club-to-primetime-drama On my desktop the extraneous ads and sidebars are swept away. Not so on smartphone: inline ads and pop-over ads remain, so it's real hard to read the actual content. Similar problems with other sites.

Are you sure you are using Reader mode? I have just tried that same link in two different copies if Firefox for Android and it did display correctly in Reader mode.

Do you have any add-ons installed?

Thanks for continuing your efforts. Unfortunately my experience is, Reader View on Firefox 91.3.1 on Android 9, is at best unreliable. Last night I tried it, and the page was re-rendered without the ad cruft. So I thought, well I'm just an idiot.

But now, the site I mentioned and also https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-android-phones,review-6051.html, fail to clean up when I tap the reader view icon on the address bar. The icon color changes from black to blue, but nothing else happens; the ads remain. Tap that icon again, and the browser goes back one page, for some strange reason.

AFAIK I have no add-ons.

Hi

What level of enhanced tracking protection do you have set?

more options

"Standard" and not changed since app install. Just now visited the site I originally cited and (of course), Reader View works again. Are you suggesting that if I turn off enhanced tracking on a site that won't go into Reader View, that may fix the issue?

Hi

I would not go that far. Certainly the strict level of tracking protection can break some site features, but when I use standard i do not have nay problem with reader mode.
