I have a whole stack of emails in the sent folder which have not actually gone anywhere. Using Windows 7 and Thunderbird 78.12.0 (32 bit). If I put the wrong password in with smtp, thunderbird just waits it seems. If I delete the smtp password line then thunderbird asks me for a password which I give but the mail doesn't get sent (no error messages). I can of course logon to webmail and send and receive. I have about a dozen different accounts all using Thunderbird which have never given me problems. Help, please. I have looked but this doesn't seem to be a common problem.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Thanks for your advice. I thought it could be Avast, which I suspended for a while. I could then send! So I looked at the Avast sellings which I only use anyway for background scanning and there is no active mail shield. However I set thunderbird to be one of the applications it didn't intefere with and I restarted it. Outgoing mails for that account blocked! I the removed Avast. Outgoing mails still blocked. I removed two add-ons in Thunderbird which were apparently disabled anyway in some version. I removed the only other add on which checks emails for English just before sending. Still blocked. I then restarted in Thunderbird safe mode. Still blocked. I restarted in safe mode f8, then put Thunderbird into safe mode. Still blocked! Just this one account, just when sending emails from that one account. I have about a dozen other accounts with thunderbird which are both IMAP and Pop3, all working perfectly. And have done so for years and years. Can I install over the top without losing all my settings?

It seems that this is an extension of the email problem I have always had with Bt, whether it's them or Firefox, I don't know. But I just can't use this, my primary account to send messages. I have another account which is acessed by my ipad, with their email client, that seems to be ok. I'll try talking to Bt. Then I think I'll switch to a thunderbird like client. There used to be a number around.

Is your BT account one of the old Yahoo ones?

Yes. But I've just installed mailbird and it works prefectly (so far) One good thing about Thunderbird is/was that you didn't need to anything other than import the main directory into a new install and everything was set up as it was. I wonder if I uninstall thunderbird then import it in, it might start working?

I've just tried the 'error console' ctrl, shift plus J. some 'errors' shown here pre-exist, others are added after I try to send a mail and it appears to be sent but isn't.

I've never done this before! Maybe something here indicates a real fault?

First use the trash icon to clear the console, then try the send. I see nothing there about the send process.

Failing anything useful turning up in the error console, you will probably have to log the SMTP connection. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging

note the batch file you need will probably be as follows as you are using Windows 7

set MOZ_LOG=SMTP:5,timestamp set MOZ_LOG_FILE=%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\SMTP.log "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"

more options

Thanks for that but I think %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe should be %ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe I am using the 32bit version of 7. Sorry but it's not creating the SMTP.log on the desktop. (or anywhere) No error messages. I am running the command prompt as adminstrator. I've cleared the log (ctrl, shift plus f) and set it running again it says:

I sent three emails from the email address which hasn't been sending. The last three I sent asking for delivery status notification and return receipt and amazingly they've all been returned by the servers they've been sent to! Which means they have actually been attempted to deliver! And I've now tried sending to one of my other email addresses and that now works!

So it all seems to be fine at the moment. But there is no reason why it should be. And I've been here before. So there's no reason why it shouldn't happen again at any time!

from the logging page. Missing Log File

If your log file is empty or missing, review this document again, and check for these common problems:

  • Do you have write access to the directory specified in MOZ_LOG_FILE?
  • Did you shut down the mailnews application? (the log file is buffered in memory)
  • Did you restart your mailnews application, and wipe out the log of the session you wanted to debug? (every restart wipes out the previous log)
  • If you used a batch file on Windows, is the batch file set to run with administrator privileges?
  • Do your log variables contain quotation marks or other invalid characters?
  • Are your log module names correctly CASE SENSITIVE? (i.e. camel case which is not all upper case, nor all lower case)
