I just lost months of emails on Spectrum server and they blame Thunderbird

I just lost (it's no longer there) months of emails on the Spectrum Server in 3 different RoadRunner accounts and they are trying to blame Thunderbird. My Gmail account which I access through Thunderbird is still intact (maybe because its not on Spectrum Server). Is there any way to recover the emails? How do I keep this from happening again? Warren
