Closed around 300+ tabs by mistake without closing FF

Hello Mozilla Community,

While selecting all my tabs to move some of them to another window, I misclicked and it opens them all twice.

Immediately after I made the mistake to accept closing what I thought was the doublons, but instead it closed them all except for the few doublons remaining.

There were many important tabs opened months ago, that's why I'm asking help.

I don't know what happened but I found this thread (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1310742) and followed some of the steps.

I managed to recover the recovery_backlzk4 in excellent state from around twenty minutes before the problem, and tried to read the URLs from it with this person's tool: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/scrounger.html

It did not work, so I don't know what to do.

Can someone explain me if there is still something to do about it or not?

Thank you very much

Undo close tabs didn't work?

If you close a whole window accidentally, try Ctrl+Shift+N to restore it (up to the last 3) or check either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > History > Recently Closed Windows
  • "Library" toolbar button > History > Recently Closed Windows
  • (menu bar) History > Recently Closed Windows

Note: Each window also has its own Recently Closed Tabs list.

What happened when you dropped the file -- did the box fill with readable text (it's crammed together, but looks like ordinary keyboard characters)?

And then when clicking the Scrounge URLs button -- did it simply never complete? Was there an error message?

Also, did you try the first level steps to see what non-deleted files are available:

Hello

Thank you for your reply.

I tried this immediately after, and it opened around ten tabs or so, the last ones closed by my misclick.

Now that I'm looking at it again, the "undo close tabs" column is still empty, though I had 300+ closed earlier.

Normally, there are a maximum of 25 closed tabs you can restore per window. The number is controlled by this preference in about:config: browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo

Hello Jscher2000

Thank you for helping me.

I followed your tutorial from the topic of Sundancer268 before writing this topic, but the recovery.jsonlz4 & recovery.baklz4 files were already "updated" as my session is still active, so the files are still active too if I can say so.

The 10+ remaining tabs from the doublons I created (I don't know why they did not disappear like the several hundreds others) plus the few ones I managed to reopen with "undo close tabs" are the only ones those two files are leading me to through your tool.

Those two files keep updating themselves every few minutes of what I've seen so I'm pretty sure the previous versions are lost since I did not know about this before finding Sundancer268's topic and so did not close FF immediately to prevent the files from replacing themselves.

The only thing older and not being replaced by a newer version in the sessionstore-backups folder is this file:

previous.jsonlz4

But it dates back to March of this year so I only managed to find a few URLs I lost from my previous session thanks to your site here:

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/scrounger.html

Four months separate March from June and all the other tabs I opened during this timelapse are apparently unreachable.

That's why I successfully tried to retrieve an older recovery.baklz4, which I dropped into the box, but it keeps staying empty. Nothing happens.

So I've just checked the time of the file I recovered and the time when the misclick happened from my FF History to be sure before replying to you, and unfortunately it appears that the two are already dating from after the loss of my tabs, just a few minutes later.

So I guess I must accept that it's lost.

I checked this and indeed the value is on 25. Can I change it to avoid this in the future?

Anyway thank you again Jscher2000 for your quick replies and help, it's really appreciated.

For the older recovery.baklz4, you also could try a Browser Console script to decompress it and save its contents in a human readable (with difficulty) form to see whether it contains any missing URLs.

Yes, but... your session history files may become much larger and perhaps a bit more fragile.

You also could consider using a session management extension as a backup. These are the ones I'm aware of that you might investigate/try out:

Use database storage:

Use bookmark storage:

Bookmark storage is more robust in that Firefox backs it up regularly. However, having the extra data show up when you are searching your bookmarks may be annoying.

Well, another lesson learned by mistake then. Thank you for trying to help me recover the tabs. At least I know what to do if it happens again.

About the file recovery.baklz4 I've recovered, I discovered that in fact it was dated from after the loss of all my tabs this morning, so it was all for nothing.

I've looked it up and added the extensions you provided to Firefox, it will surely greatly help me from now on. Such useful tools. The annoyance of an extra data showing up is a small thing compared to a massive loss of tabs, don't worry!

Thank you for all of this, your knowledge and advices were appreciated.

Take care!
