Ever since I began using a Mac desktop computer (in 2018), every time it was shut down or restarted, all of my Firefox settings, add-ons, bookmarks, logins, cookies, and history disappeared. Everything is returned to the defaults as if I never had Firefox on my computer before. I never had this problem with any Windows computer, so I thought this problem must be compatibility with Apple not being good. But it works fine as long as I don't close my browser completely. What is going on? Is this fixable?

My operating system is still Mojave, but Firefox is up to date. I only have a desktop computer and like it that way.

Make sure you install Firefox properly and that you do not run Firefox from within the DMG (Disk Image) file.

Open the Firefox Disk Image file and drag the Firefox application to the Applications folder on your hard drive. You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the Disk Image, but instead drag it out of the DMG folder.

Note that you may have to cleanup no longer used profiles or possibly recover lost data.

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. One location for your personal data (e.g. bookmarks) and another location for temporary files like the disk cache, so make sure to look in the correct location.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>

In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the "~/Library" folder in the Home directory is a hidden folder.
