Modifying Firefox Preferences via GPO

I'm looking for help with using GPO's to control Firefox settings. When I modify anything in the Preferences section, the GPO description says to use JSON to configure and has a github website. At the github website, there are two examples. Should I be using the Windows GPO example or the policies.json example? Also, in both examples, entries have a "status" value, where does this come from?
