New emails not loading unless I make TB forget password and don't click to remember it.

This is not happening on my email, but a co-workers email.

New emails will not load when TB is started. After much trial and error I figured out that if I got rid of the stored password and then didn't click to remember it, new emails appeared as soon as the password is entered. New emails thereafter will not load until the program is closed and reopened and password is entered once again. Once I click to save password, new emails will not appear, and clicking on "get messages" silently does nothing. Outgoing email asks for password to be entered too, and sure enough it sends as soon as the password is entered.

I have been in contact with the email server and made sure all server info and port #'s are as they should be. We also verified that using the web-portal for the email through a browser works just fine, no issues. Coworker is on an IMAP email server.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Apparently this an issue that has been going on for a few weeks/months but just on his 2 windows computers and 1 Android tablet. Email works fine on iphone as well as the web. Thanks!

They would need to have the password stored in order to test properly.

I'm assuming the imap mail account Account Settings > Server Setting has these selected:

  • 'Check for new messages at start up'
  • 'Check for new messages every 10 minutes'
  • 'Allow immediate server notification when new messages arrive'
  • click on 'Advanced' button
  • 'Maximum number of server connections to cache' - reduce to 2 (I noted there are several computers and phone connections to server which may have a limit if connections are not closed.)
  • click on OK

Do they have 'Local Folders' mail account set up as the default mail account ? Make sure they set up the imap mail account as the default mail account.

  • Select imap account name
  • Click on 'Account Actions'
  • Select 'Set as default'

Then restart Thunderbird.

Did co-worker start Thunderbird in Safe Mode to see it works ok ? If it works in Safe Mode: Do they use the addon Manually Sort Folders ? What addons do they use? You would need to disable addon one at a time and restart to see which was causing the problem

Did they do this test: Exit all programs and restart computer in 'Safe Mode with Networking' mode. start Thunderbird to see if auto check at start up. If starts all ok for checking mail, the Anti-Virus could be causing a problem - what AV are they using? need to make the Thunderbird profile folder and files exempt from scanning.

Other checks: Confirm only one instance of Thunderbird is installed.

Thank you for all your help! I should be able to try/test your suggestions tomorrow. (I have tried safe modes, both TB's and Windows. I also already made sure to check on add-on's in their TB and they are not any). I still have lots to check though based on your other questions/suggestions.
