For most regions of the world, Google pays Mozilla to be the default search engine at installation in Firefox. But you can change it any time as FredMcD mentioned.

Are you talking about the home page? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-set-the-home-page

Or the search engine? Type about:preferences#search<enter> in the address bar. You can select any search engine to be your default from here.

You can also remove any engine from here.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have been going around in circles. I have tried your advice - still cannot find firefox as a search engine in itself. I can see how to remove a search engine. I tried Duck Duck Go but worried because I couldn't get my Norton safe green ticks onto safe search with duck duck Go. I tried making Firefox the default search engine using the Microsoft advise, but the instructions did not work. I am wondering, is there such a thing as an icon indicating Firefox as the main, primary) search engine? Maybe there is such not a thing and that is why I am not successful. I was thinking of getting rid of Firefox and trying another search engine, but Firefox scored highly on something I read - I also like many of the add-on safety features - I have recently been scammed of a large sum of money and I am now very nervous about the I/Net, security, scammers, phishers etc, etc etc. However, it is here to stay and I will just have to get on with it, trying to be as safe as is possible. In fact I find Firefox very 'busy' and it is difficult for me to navigate and understand - maybe it is for more tech savvy individuals who know how to zip around all of the instructions and understand the IT language used. Anyway. thank you for your help. I'll keep trying to sort this out.

Maybe this helps with the terminology:

"Web Browser" - a program to view web pages. Examples: Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome.

"Search Engine" - a website to obtain search results. Examples: Bing(.com), DuckDuckGo(.com), Google(.com). There is no Mozilla or Firefox website for web searching.
