inability to sign into my hotmail/outlook through Firefox

more options

Hi! Glad someone is here to help!

Last week I was signed out of my Hotmail account. Which is now technically Outlook, but I still have a Hotmail email address. I did not sign out. Just came home to discover that I was signed out. I found the main Outlook sign up page, which also had "sign in" on it, which I clicked.

The next thing that showed up was a mostly blank page with the Microsoft squares, my email address, and password filled in in the upper left corner of the page. Underneath it said "next" which I clicked, and nothing happened. I tried to chat with Microsoft about it, and in the end I downloaded Chrome, which instantly let me into my account. I truly don't want to use Chrome. But so far my ability to access my account via Firefox has not been successful. I would be so happy if anyone could help me understand what is gong on, and how to fix it. Thank for reading this!!!!!! ps I have Linux as my operating system. I had someone who knows Linux well come to help me, but he couldn't figure it out either.

Yes! I uploaded the image that comes up after I click "sign in" on the Microsoft sign in page I can't upload the image of the Microsoft sign in page because it says it is too big. But I wonder if it is a legit page. The Microcoft boxes at the top of the page are not colored. Thanks for your help!

Hi, I understand you are attempting to login to Outlook: https://outlook.live.com/owa/ Is this the address you are using?

The screenshot you have attached looks to me like the page has not loaded correctly. I have attached what the sign-in page looks like when I try to access it. --- Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. (Firefox 57 and above) Click the Library button 57 library icon and choose History.
(Click the menu button New Fx Menu and choose History in older Firefox versions.)
  2. In the History menu, choose "Clear Recent History...".
  3. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  4. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  5. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  6. Now click the "Clear Now" button.

Further information can be found in the Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox article. --- Please also try disabling any ad/tracker blockers on the page and trying again. Thank you.

I don't know what is going on with that page. Maybe it's for mobile??

Any difference if you start with a recent address from your history such as the following instead of the usual way you go to Hotmail:

https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/inbox

More generally, if a site is known to work in Firefox, these are standard suggestions to try when it stops working normally in your Firefox:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Tracking Protection feature, and extensions that counter ads and tracking, may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

(A) The shield icon toward the left end of the address bar usually turns a bit purplish when content is blocked. Click the icon to learn more or make an exception. See: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix usually provide a toolbar button to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you sometimes need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?
