Can I delete mails from main page without opening them?

I am using a version of Thunderbird that is about 15 years old and always have to find an old version when I buy a new computer. What is missing on the newer versions, is a way to delete emails from the main page, without opening them. There used to be a delete button above the emails, and one could click the first email to darken but not open it, and then choose delete at the top. I am a contester, so get about 300 - 400 advertising emails a day, so like to just keep my finger on delete, and click it as each new letter moves up to the top when the first one is deleted. I can then scan the subject line, which is almost always a solicitation, and then keep clicking delete, delete, delete, unless it is a "real" email, which I then open and read, before deciding whether to delete it, respond to it, or save it permanently. I don't see anything in the options above the list of new emails that allows me to delete anymore (since it was dropped about 15 years ago), but maybe there is a keyboard key that would act in that manner for me? But using such an old version has become far too frustrating now, since it hasn't been supported for at least a decade. There are irritations such as pictures not able to load, and error boxes that have to be x'ed out repeatedly, before I can see the contents of the emails I actually open. I really would like to stick with Thunderbird if possible, so hope that there is an answer to my problem. Thank you.

Close the Message Pane (F8), so that when you select a message it isn't opened, then press the Delete key. If you want a Delete button on the Mail Toolbar, right-click the bar, Customize..., and drag the button onto the bar.

I very much appreciate your effort to help, but I'm not sure that I made my problem clear enough. How does one delete an email from the main page (inbox) without opening it first (delete it based on the subject line)? Can this be done so that I can finally upgrade my 15 year old version, or is there no way to do this on Thunderbird at all?

I'm adding to this "delete key on keyboard intermittantly stops working" thread.

TB version = latest, 78.11.** IMAP

Fresh start up tapping delete key on std windows 10 keyboard works as expected. Intermittantly after a few days, weeks, delete key stops working. If you force focus on a new message (read) delete key works, but focus on next message is not correct (??) and delete key does nothing.

A TB restart brings back normal function. Again this is IMAP.

Tnx above for mentioning adding a delete button to top tool bar, and the delete on right for each msg, both work when the delete key stops.  :) :)

Just wanting to mention that this odd delete key issue still exists. I'm a 20 yr TB user and this (IMAP) keyboard delete key stopping working has existed for .... a long time. BUT no doubt I'm very thankful for you developers an dhave donated to the foundation.

Take care, all.
