How to disable mail encryption by default?

I have set up an account with S/MIME and OpenPGP encryption enabled in Thunderbird (78.7.0). So far so good, but I don't have keys for all my contacts (who has?). How can I disable the default encryption mode, so that I stop getting error messages when sending or saving mails? It's always reporting errors because it can't find encryption certificates. I can disable this by clicking "Security -> Don't Encrypt", but on every new message I have to disable encryption again if I don't have public keys for that person. This is annoying, especially if I have set the default options in the account settings to "not activated by default".

So, how can I prevent Thunderbird from setting this encryption to a default, when I don't want it to?

account settings > end to end encryption and change the option to DO not enable encryption by default.

Mine is set that way, and I also send signed mail so the encryption key is included.

Well, thank you for your answer!

The problem is, that that's exactly what is set for this account. So it's set to "do not enable encryption by default". And still, this setting is enabled by default every time I open up a new message. Maybe the settings switch is just plain broken?

this setting is enabled by default every time I open up a new message.

Are you saying when you open a new blank Write window encryption is turned on? Or are you responding to an encrypted message? In the latter case this is the expected behavior.

Yes, encryption is enabled when I open a blank new message window. For whatever reason, even though I disabled the setting you pointed out to me.

Replying encrypted to an already encrypted message is completely fine for security reasons. In this case thus I'd expect to have the recipient's key present.

In my case I am constantly confronted with error messages while writing the mail because Thunderbird wants to store an encrypted draft but hasn't even a suitable key for the selected recipient.

So this means this is unintended behavior and possibly a bug? I just thought maybe I am missing out some of the new security settings.

Encryption keys are per account. Perhaps you have not set the appropriate account to not use encryption.

When an account is set up for OpenPGP encryption, then it will ultimately save draft messages encrypted. This is unrelated to whether you want to send the message encrypted or not. So my best guess is something is wrong with your OpenPGP setup for the account, so that draft messages cannot be saved encrypted.

Well the account is definitely to "not use encryption" by default.

But it could be somehow related to an openPGP key for another identity on this account, I am going to check this. Thank you!
