When attempting to access https://signup.gmx.com I get the following error;

The requested URL was rejected. Please consult with your administrator. Your support ID is: < 3522328377538005653>

I contacted GMX and they have been unable to tell me why I can't access their signup page. I had my brother do a test from his home. He's on a different ISP. He is using a VPN, but this worked off VPN too. He is using the same ESR version of Firefox that I am, and he's on the same Windows 10 version I am. Also, he's using the same router I am with the same firmware. He can access the page without issue.

What I've tried;

I do not get this error for any other site. I've been trying to access this page on and off for about 6 months. It doesn't appear to be a temporary error.

Any ideas what might be causing this? thanks

Got it! It was the useragent override string that was causing the problem. Any user agent override string broke the site. Had to remove it completely otherwise the URL was rejected.

It appears that preference persists even in safe mode. I'd been doing some testing with it and forgot to take it out when I rolled out v68. Took it off all the PCs and I was able to access the site and create an account.

It's good that I didn't have to upgrade to 78 yet. I'm still working on a few issues with that - each new ESR major release breaks a bunch of stuff and I have to go through a process of finding ways to re-implement things or find replacements - which answers the question "Why the old version of Firefox".

Hi

It looks like you are using an older version of Firefox. I recommend that you update, this guide will help:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-release

I hope that this helps.

Works for me. see screenshot Did you try in safe mode? Besides Windows Defender, what other virus or security apps are you running? Also, why the old version of Firefox?

Thanks for your response. Refer 5th item on list Also tried several other things; Such as different user agents. I'm actually running Windows 10. Not 8.1/Firefox 73. I've know I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel, just trying everything I can think of. I have no doubt that it's something at my end, as you have pointed out. I got that when I found that my brother could access it from his place. The question is; look at the list of thing I've tried. What did I miss? I can't think of anything else to try.

What does the 5th item have to do with trying the browser in safe mode?

more options

The fifth item on the list of things I tried says "Run browser in safe mode" :) I read it again and thought perhaps maybe you meant did I run Windows in safe mode, but then you've confirmed that you meant "browser in safe mode" :)

Apologies; you asked what security tools. Malware bytes, Windows Defender. Then I also uninstalled Malwarebytes (by restoring from an image created before I installed MBAM)

Windows Safe Mode is not a bad idea. Give it a try.

Happens to the best of us :)

I'm actually running 68.12.0 ESR. I only use ESR releases.

I don't think is FF version related because as I said, my brother is on exactly the same version as I am

I am currently testing 78.6.0 on my test PC before it gets rolled out to all PCs in Feb.

But, it's something I haven't tried so I will give it a go. I'll image the PC again and upgrade and try again. I'll also try Windows safe mode.

It's midnight here so I'm going to call it a night and start again in the am.

Will let you know if the upgrade works.

What is a user agent override and where would it be entered? I found the default user agent setting, and it is correct (also, I'm using the latest version of everything), but I'm not familiar with user agent override.

Two of the websites that cause trouble are: https://www.paycomonline.net/v4/ee/web.php/app/login?logout=true (my wife's company's HR website; this is intermittent from week to week) and https://www.jea.com/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/Apps/MyJUT/Alerts.aspx (Jacksonville Electric Authority), and there are others that have come up once or twice.

Could this have anything to do with the VPN "spoofing" a location the website is not intended to cover? I live in Jacksonville, Florida, and the two locations I have selected are New York City and Atlanta (usually New York, since it seems to reduce latency). I have to turn the VPN off to access these websites, and remember to turn it back on when I finish; and of course, limit my other internet exposure in between. The HR website, when it doesn't work, will allow me to turn the VPN back on while signed in, and it works properly, but will not sign OFF when finished unless I disable the VPN again.

As you can see, this problem still exists in 2021.
