Remove History For One Site {web link}

Open the History Manager <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> H. In the search bar, enter the name of the site. Right-click on one of the listings and select Forget About This Site. This should remove all information, including any site settings

Thanks for suggestion Fred but have tried this (multiple times to make sure) and it hasn't worked. Still works fine on MS Edge, so I assume it's not a problems with the website, just my PC & Firefox. Any other ideas would be gratefully received. Thanks again, Neil

Hi Neil, if a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are standard suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Tracking Protection feature, and extensions that counter ads and tracking, may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

(A) The shield icon toward the left end of the address bar usually turns a bit purplish when content is blocked. Click the icon to learn more or make an exception. See: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix usually provide a toolbar button to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you sometimes need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). (You mentioned already doing this.) While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh). Any improvement?

Hi jscher2000 - thanks for these suggestions. Very thorough and detailed :-) Sadly I've been through them and still no joy - it's getting quite complicated!

Double-checked content blockers:

  • there is no purplish tinge to the shield icon toward the left end of the address bar (I can see this on other sites now you mention, but not here)
  • I don't have any ad-blocking or similar extensions (and when I tried in 'safe mode' as suggested I could see all extensions were blocked)

Cleared my cache using link you provided (could see I had about 1GB in my cache, this dropped to about 1MB after I did so, confirming I'd done so OK). Successfully removed the site's cookies as suggested after clicking on the 'lock' icon. I'd already found & deleted their (single) cookie, though. Closed & restarted Firefox in Safe mode as suggested.

In the middle of doing all above I noticed the page I was trying to get [ https://bristolmenu.com/#/shop/volunteer-tavern/boarding ] had loaded OK. This appears to be a fluke (??!?) as I repeated all these steps and couldn't get it back again.

Very frustrating! It comes up every time using Edge, but I'd MUCH rather continue with Mozilla Firefox if I can.

I wonder if other users can get the page [ https://bristolmenu.com/#/shop/volunteer-tavern/boarding ] using Firefox? Is it my PC or is it Firefox itself (the page is for a takeaway menu for a local pub here).

Thanks again for time & help so far but no joy - any other suggestions appreciated... Thanks, Neil

I haven't noticed a problem. I run NoScript, and the page definitely does not load in the standard "block everything" configuration (first screenshot). If I make sure NoScript isn't blocking everything, then I get an overlay to select delivery/takeaway (second screenshot).

Any difference if you switch the DNS over HTTPS setting? This article has more information: Firefox DNS-over-HTTPS.

Thanks again for your time. I'm struggling to keep up with this level of depth of knowledge, but trying to! Yes - the site is to order food/drink & the first bit is a pop-up box to select delivery/takeaway as on your 2nd screenshot. Trying to get to this site on Firefox is what started this...

I found the 'Enable DNS over HTTPS' as suggested & ticked that (it was unticked) but that hasn't helped with this particular site.

I found the Add-On 'NoScript Security Suite by Giorgio Maone' and tried adding it and fiddling with the controls (but not sure what I was doing here) and SOMETIMES seemed to get the 'bristolmenu.com' page, but I also found I couldn't get other sites (including local government websites for instance - nothing 'ominous') so have removed it. It only seemed to work SOMETIMES anyway for some reason??

I'm truly grateful for your help but, as I say, struggling to understand what's going on. If you have any further suggestions I'm all ears, but it's seeming like Firefox is not suitable for a numpty like me & my only option is to use Edge, sadly.

With best of wishes, Neil

Hi Neil, I was not suggesting that you install NoScript. It takes a high paranoia approach to browsing where nothing is trusted until you explicitly trust it. Sorry I mentioned it. My point there was simply that if scripts are blocked on the page, I get a blank page, and if I unblock them, the page loads normally.

Is this ordering site the only site not loading/running properly on your Firefox? I think we've checked all the usual things, and it's dfificult to guess whether there is a modified setting that is having an effect here.
