json files
I do not know what json files are. I have only seen them in the profile. However, whatever their purpose, firefox is no longer processing json files. Instead, it wants to download json.txt when I make some selections.
Example: on Youtube when signed into my account, I select "notification" and instead of the menu opening, the download box appears wanting to download json.txt. This has happened in numerous places - not only youtube, so it looks like a Firefox problem.
Firefox used to process json files and now wants to download them. I tried to configure json in options, and when I select "other" Firefox shows up as a choice it it not possible to select it. I select it, but it does not change the ONLY options for json files which are "always ask" or "save".
This is clearly not something I can fix, not something I caused. I need the features that are not functional, and apparently they have become dysfunctional because they apparently access json files but no longer process them as intended.
Would appreciate knowing what the problem is, if there is an explanation. Is there a fix? Do I need to configure something? Thanks. Mary

Hi Mary, JSON is a syntax scripts use to write out data that is meant to be used by other scripts.
Usually a site wouldn't send you a JSON file unless a script in the page requested it, and then the script should intercept and read it. That should all be invisible, and you shouldn't be asked what to do with the file.
Could you test some of the problem sites in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
Any improvement?
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.
The suggestions did not solve the problem. But I found some add-ons that had not been deleted going through the folder manually (of course with the browser closed) - addon's that I had tried, some of which I had disabled then deleted. However, apparently some of the configuring the add-ons did, remains, and the add-on folders were not all deleted when I deleted the add-ons using "add-ons" in "tools". They probably corrupted the configuration file and made it problematic. I manually deleted some of the add-ons I had deleted that had remained which were clearly identifiable, but many are not identifiable. Unfortunately, Firefox becomes dysfunctional if a good mix of add-ons are not used. That requires trial and error to test add-ons. When they are not removed after deletion they create problems.
