Well let me begin by saying I 'LOVE MOZILLA AND THUNDERBIRD!'! Next I need help. I am not the brightest star in the computer sky. A kind phrase would be "Computer Challenged Olde Pharte". I want to escape Snoopy g-mail/Google & all the others including Facebook. But I have FOUR gmail addresses 1. church groups & the like; 2. E-pals Jokes & Stories; 3. JUnk Mail - all the stores that want your e-dress; & 4. e-Bay. I have Charter.net as my ISP. So they are where I get my T-bird emails. HOW can I or CAN I??? Get rid of gmail (I use Duck Duck Go for search engine) ??? Bless you all for what you do Being altruistic in this day & age is NOT easy!

More Explanation: My internet is provided by Charter/Spectrum. When I look at Thunderbird, it is on my charter email address. I have 4 gmail email addresses & 1 gmail Facebook address. Is there some way I can get e-mail accounts without having to use gmail, or hotmail, or the other big boyz? I guess I am okay with having to pay my widow's mite to an email provider who does not use all my communications to sell & otherwise profit from them. But how do I do that if it is possible? Thanks again good Firefox friends. Kathy Hall

You cannot. Even if you use T-Bird, you have a G-mail account. The only way out is to pay for your own webservice, not expensive, and re-create your own e-mail. I recently went through this for a "hobby" business.

If you have an @gmail.com account, it goes through their servers

By gmail address do you mean an account with @gmail dot com or a different email address? If it's an @gmail dot com email then you can not "leave them" or move them on another server. Though you can set filters in gmail so you can fwd all the mails to another email on another server, and that "another email" you can set it to work with TB.

Okay I will clairfy. I have 4 email accounts that are @gmail.com accounts. I want to close them. BUT Where can I go to establish 4 more email addresses/sites with sites that are not so invasive? I use Thunderbird on my charter (ISP) account. How do I find a way to have more accounts? At my age this keeps my serious/business/ social/Junk accounts separated. Do I make any sense? & thank you for telling me I can't move the 4 gmail accounts. My Thunderbird email comes to my @Charter.net So that is not using Mozilla/Firefox is it? & so it is not under gmail's thumb?

I am back & apologize for being so obtuse. I'm 80 & basically lazy. I really do not like to deal with computer stuff. SO let me reword my question. Okay Charter/Spectrum is my internet service provider. When I use my Thunderbird email address it is [email]@charter.net... that is NOT G mail is it?? I do not think so, but I am computer challenged. SO my blue Thunderbird email box is on the bottom of the screen. Next is a Mozilla box & on there I have four g-mail addresses and one Facebook address. so that is really five, correct?? Duck duck go is my place I go to find stuff - web browser?? not google.

I want to be rid of the 4 g mail addresses. AND Facebook

Do I go to Charter.net (Thunderbird) am I free of g mail when I use the charter.net email address? I never could understand if it is a THUNDERBIRD email program why isn't it [email]@thunderbird.com? No one ever told me the answer to that.

SO Please make it simple so this ol' cotton top can divest myself of all the g mail & Facebook accounts.

And I thank the 3 people who answered back at my last try to figure out what I was doing. I'm just not clear. & don't want to mess this up. I will combine the junk mail & church mail accounts & then the charter account/current Thunderbird account will become my personal/jokes & stories account. I will go from 4 to 2 maybe three? time for bed, I'm falling asleep as I was up at 5 to have a procedure at the hospital. That is OVER now to gt back to dueling with the computer gremlins. Thank you all for being here to help. off to bed & will check back in tomorrow Happy Mardi Gras... in 15 minutes it is Ash Wednesday! WOW time flies!

re : Okay Charter/Spectrum is my internet service provider. When I use my Thunderbird email address it is [email]@charter.net... that is NOT G mail is it??

No - nothing to do with gmail, that is an email address provided to you by the same people who are providing your internet service. Spectrum provides internet services. They provide email address and they have a server. Emails sent to your Charter/Spectrum email address are received on the Spectrum servers. You can logon directly to Spectrum webmail account which you access via browser like Firefox to see emails. You can also set up a mail account in Thunderbird to connect to the server so you can see those same emails - you have done this already.

re :Do I go to Charter.net (Thunderbird) am I free of g mail when I use the charter.net email address? Yes.

RE: my blue Thunderbird email box is on the bottom of the screen. Next is a Mozilla box & on there I have four g-mail addresses and one Facebook address. so that is really five, correct??.

'on the bottom of the screen. ' - I think you are talking about the 'TaskBar' which goes across the bottom of the computer screen. Next is a Mozilla box which I'm presuming you mean 'Mozilla Firefox' browser icon. ' & on there I have four g-mail addresses' - this sounds like you are talking about Gmail Accounts which you access/logon to the gmail webmail account via Firefox browser.

You asked if you could access those gmail accounts using Thunderbird. Yes you can create mail accounts in Thunderbird to access those gmail accounts and download emails which you read in Thunderbird. BUT, the gmail account /email address still exists on the gmail server. Gmail still have your gmail email addresses and store all the emails on the gmail servers. Creating a mail account in Thunderbird for those gmail email addresses means you will be allowing Thunderbird to access the gmail server so it can download emails.

re:I never could understand if it is a THUNDERBIRD email program why isn't it [email]@thunderbird.com? No one ever told me the answer to that.

Thunderbird is just a program downloaded to your computer. It facilitates you being able to access emails from different servers - different email address - all in one place in Thunderbird. Meaning you do not need to logon to all the different webmail accounts separately. You get a clean view with no adverts etc. Thunderbird uses the information stored in the mail account - your email address and it's password to connect to the correct server. Emails are downloaded from the server which has your emails and stored in files on your computer so you can read the emails.

Thunderbird is not a server. It does not provide internet services and therefore does not provide email addresses. It is just a program running on your computer.

re : Is there some way I can get e-mail accounts without having to use gmail, or hotmail, or the other big boyz? An Option: As you currently have a Spectrum account for the charter email address, you should be able to create additional email addresses with @sprectum.net Info here: https://www.spectrum.net/support/manage-account/creating-username/

The only issue is that if you change your internet service provider then you may lose the email address.

An Option: Try DMX - loads of info here: https://www.gmx.com/mail/create-email-address/ email address consists of name @ domain This allows you to choose name @ gmx.com Please note that once you have created email addresses then you can also add them as existing mail account into Thunderbird.

Toad Hall, This Olde Pharte really found your response helpful. You have patiently explained piece by piece my conundrum. But I didn't make it as clear as I should have. NO I do NOT want to access g mail anywhere. Yes the bar at the bottom of the screen is what I was speaking of. I am still not quite clear about Mozilla/Firefox. When I turn my computer on, I have the Red Firefox icon on the bar at the bottom AND I have Blue Thunderbird If I click on Thunderbird it takes me to Spectrum/Charter.net & my Thunderbird emails are there.

If I click on Red Mozilla/Firefox, the bar across the top gives me options. I click on the Star on the upper right & it shows my list of bookmarks. Now I have a sub-folder 'Facebook & Google' I click on that & can go to either my Facebook or to one of my 4 g mail accounts. SO I am Breaking down jobs or levels

Charter/Spectrum is my ISP internet service provider. Is that the same as a Server? Mozilla is my Browser; What does a browser do? Firefox is my ...? What does it do? Google is a search engine g mail is an email account/company Facebook is a Social Network provider

Google, g mail & Facebook (all owned or related?) Google also owns You-tube. & Google Chrome & I do not want that either. Is YouTube as invasive & snoopy leaving cookies all over & selling my info as g mail & Facebook?

Would I go to Duck Duck Go (my search engine/ computerized encyclopedia ?) & look there for email providers? & Social Network providers? Then I can go find another email provider & social network to replace Facebook & G-mail? Then I can delete Google, Chrome, g-mail & Facebook?

I"m really trying to wrap my head around this stuff. but I think one of the pieces in my brain housing group fell off the puzzle table... abstract reasoning. Be well Kait Hall
