The backup is a week old. The history is incomplete. BUT it was there yesterday. It's happened before, and doesn't seem related to updates. Any thoughts?

If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

When done, copy and post the results here.

not using sync. It's not the issue. I've tried looking at wether or not a particular page being open when I close down impacts, (no). I've tried playing with shutdown procedures, closing, re-opening and checking for bookmarks. I've tried not leaving it sleeping with the browser left open, (no).

I keep losing bookmarks. randomly. sometimes whole days worth.

Profile data can be removed or not recorded in several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings; (In the address bar,
    type about:preferences#privacy<enter>)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers.
Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.

I called for more help.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Do this to save your bookmarks safely.

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file.

Use these links to create a new profile. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Already answered as not using sync.

But, is any other type of "synchronization service" being used for bookmarks?
iCloud has been mentioned frequently here as being the problem for some Firefox users, with regards to similar sounding postings.

ok, so it's happened again. I can now guess that it's losing 4 days worth of history. No security software was running or installed during that time. (I know, quite the risk, I have multiple log ins so I did important stuff on a secured browser different machine).

no other sync is running/installed/logged-into.

the only thing that I notice is that if I go to save a book mark it will only allow me to edit an exiting one for that site. Even if I didn't already have one for it. I can look and see that I've already lost bookmarks at that point. If I then restart the browser it will allow me to start collecting new bookmarks........
