My firefox browser has been opening multiple tabs with this: file:///C:/Users/Joyce/AppData/Local/Temp/S%2014%20lesson%20plan%20J&A-2.pdf What is going on? I can't close them. I tried. I rebooted but it did nothing. I'm using Windows 10. I also just upgraded my ccleaner yesterday. This started a couple of days ago though. Help!

It is safer to download them to a good folder first, then you could open them however you like. The reason I say that is if that site goes down, or your internet, then you have a local copy to work with that isn't in the Temp folder. (Stuff in the Temp folder could be removed at any time.)

It's calling a file from your hard drive: file:///C:/Users/Joyce/AppData/Local/Temp/S 14 lesson plan J&A-2.pdf

When are these tabs opened? During startup? While browsing?

A friend fixed this problem...so far. We went to where the files were kept and deleted all of them. That way they wouldn't keep opening tabs. It turns out that it only happened at the Rallyhood site where I was trying to download school work for my grandchildren. Maybe it's Rallyhood that's messed up. Since the files have been deleted I've been able to use Firefox without trouble, although I have to download assignments now rather than simply opening them in the browser like I used to. Does that sound about right to keep this from happening in the future?

The files are opened up when clicking on the link at the Rallyhood website. That's where I've been going to open files related to schoolwork.

The website's options for opening files has changed, though. Now I find that I can't just click the link, I have to download it in order to open it. I can use jscher2000's idea to put them in another folder...although I find that they do go to the temp folder where I can access them for the time I need them. Since it's schoolwork, it changes week by week so I only need them for that week. I don't think they'll disappear in that time should I need them again.

Hello, I have this problem with the New York Times crossword puzzle. I print it daily but as of Monday, April 20 when I click print, multiple tabs open in Firefox. As I close the tabs, this message comes up. Firefox can’t find the file at /C:/Users/hbmos/AppData/Local/Temp/Apr2020.pdf. I've contacted the Times but it's been three days and nothing has changed. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but it's the same issue as Joyce has. Thank you so much. Nancy Moseley

Hi Nancy, does your Firefox have issues opening other PDFs? Please make sure Firefox is not set to call itself to open PDFs since that can cause an infinite loop of dozens of new tabs/windows.

Hi Jscher2000, I rarely open PDFs, but I had recently changed the print option to open in Firefox. Seems that's a bad thing so using the links you posted, I changed the print option back to using Edge. Thank you for the help on this, I can go back to printing and solving my crosswords. Stay well. Nancy

This problem I'm having with Firefox only happens on my desktop and only in Firefox, not in another browser. Why?

Hi joyce.greer2, I thought you solved the problem. But now it's back?

When you tell Firefox to open a download directly into an application rather than saving it first, it is normal for the file to remain in the Windows temp folder.

The numerous tabs opening for PDFs reminds me of a different problem, so you might review the following article for that: Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link.

Well, the problem is solved in that, instead of clicking the link and getting it to open in Firefox, I have to download it and open it in another browser or in PDF form. This doesn't happen in another desktop on the same computer. It opens just fine there with one click. This is what I don't understand. Why not on my desktop like it used to? I have to download it now.

What is your current PDF handling preference on the Options page? Preview in Firefox is safest:

Yes! I did as you showed and then tried to click on the Rallyhood link and it showed in Firefox! Yay! Thank you!
