FIREFOX 75 UPDATE: How to change internet address bar dropdown to display most visited sites?

How to change the browser.urlbar.maxRichResults in about:config to display more recently viewed websites in the drop-down list in the address bar after Firefox 75 update? I only see 6 results when I had it set to about 20 before.

I have gone to browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus and changed that setting to False thinking that would help but all that has done is eliminated the entire drop-down list altogether when the address bar is clicked.

I checked my browsing privacy options in the settings menu within Firefox and it appears everything remains exactly as before, prior to update. Maybe there is some special combo of settings and about:config options that can bring the drop-down menu back that I enjoyed so much prior to update version 75.

Any recommendations?

hi, you can try setting browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.topsites to false.

Thank you so much... That solved the issue... Brilliant!

For anyone afraid to go into about:config, you also can disable the "Top Sites" section of the Firefox Home / new tab page from the Options/Preference page (Home panel) where it looks like this:

I originally chose this answer as the solution and it worked for me for about 3 months but I guess after an update this reverted the drop down menu to only showing 6 of the most visited of my sites as opposed the 15 or 20 I desire.

Any new suggestions?

You can now find the Top Sites setting in Options/Preferences as part of what suggestions to show in the drop-down list.

The location bar drop-down list can show history items, bookmarked pages, pages opened in tabs, top sites, and search suggestions.

You can set what suggestions show when you enter an URL in the location/address bar bar.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Address Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:
    History
    Bookmarks
    Open tabs
    Top sites
  • Options/Preferences -> Search -> Search Suggestions

Thank you for the advice but unfortunately this solution doesn't increase the number of most visited websites in the drop down menu when clicking on the address bar.

What is the current setting of browser.urlbar.maxRichResults on the about:config page ?

The height of the Firefox window needs to be large enough to have the suggestions fit as Firefox won't add a scroll bar unless you use code in userChrome.css.

Hi Lucardy, the automatic list that opens on click before you type anything should show your first 8 "Top Sites" from the new tab page. When you type a space, you should get the classic frequently visited URLs list at its full length.

I realize eight is not a lot more than six, but you should be able to get eight in Firefox 78. You'll be able to get more in Firefox 79, but either way, you may need to clean up the Top Sites a list a bit to clear out unwanted items, especially pinned search shortcuts. Here's how:

Manual Cleanup Method

(1) If you've got it disabled, at least temporarily, you need to turn the Top Sites section of the Firefox Home / new tab page back on: Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content

(2) Open about:newtab or about:home to display the Top Sites list. You can remove unwanted "Top Sites" by hovering your mouse over them, clicking the menu button that appears, and using either unpin (to let the site float back into a frequency-based order) or dismiss if you never want to see it. More info: Customize your Firefox New Tab page.

Flush Pinned Tabs Method

If you have never customized the list and want to clear it, you can try this approach I saw suggested on Reddit:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(B) In the search box in the page, type or paste newt and pause while the list is filtered

(C) On the row for the browser.newtabpage.pinned preference, click the trash can icon at the right end to empty it. (Or you can double-click the value to display an editing field, delete the contents, then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change.)

My browser.urlbar.maxRichResults are set to '20' but no matter what number I set it too, the drop down list from the address bar when clicked, never changes from '6'. My Windows FireFox browser screen is more than big enough to fit more without a scrollbar having to appear, just as it did before this recent update and years of using Firefox.

My browser.urlbar.maxRichResults are set to 20 but no matter what number I change that option to, the drop down list of most visited sites remains at 6 within the address bar, when clicked.

My Firefox browser on Windows has always had more than enough room to fit the increase of the number of sites without producing a scroll bar, but no matter what number I change it to, it remains at 6.

Firefox 78 has only an 8-item maximum for the automatic drop-down list, the one that appears when you click the bar before you type anything.

Firefox 79 can show more items: it will be the lesser of

  • the number of Top Sites you've specified for the Firefox Home / new tab page (each rows adds 8):

  • the value of browser.urlbar.maxRichResults

For now, if you are only getting 6 instead of 8, you should check whether you have pinned search engine shortcuts you can remove from the Top Sites section of the Firefox Home / new tab page as I described earlier.

Thank you for your assistance... I guess I will have to suck it up and simply use the new tab/top sites, address bar with 8 drop down choices, and browser toolbar options to compensate until the drop down option is fixed in a later update.

I know it sounds petty, but my mind simply prefers the drop down menu with a long list for whatever reason.

Thanks again.
