Randomly can't create, move, or delete bookmarks on desktop without restarting FF

Randomly, though seemingly after closing too many tabs in a short amount of time (but I can't say with certainty that it's related, just that it seems to be the only connection I can see), I suddenly lose the ability to create, delete, or move bookmarks. I can edit pre-existing bookmarks at first, and I can make new bookmarks by pressing the "Bookmark this page" star, but cannot change where that bookmark is placed, and after doing that just once that I can no longer edit any bookmarks. Sync still works and bookmarks can be changed in Firefox mobile and synced with the bugged desktop session. "Verify integrity" shows no problems while this is active, and the browser console does not show any errors while trying to edit bookmarks. No other aspects of the browser seem to be affected. Restarting Firefox fixes the issue.

This has only been occurring over the last month and has never occurred that I can remember before this February. Deleting my profile, redoing my bookmarks, and even totally deleting all AppData Folders and my account and starting totally from scratch has not fixed the issue. There are no unusual characters in my user folder's name. Other people who have experienced this bug have had errors show up in verify integrity, so if anyone knows anything else that might cause this I'd appreciate the help.

If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

When done, copy and post the results here.

I alreasy said in my OP that verify integrity shows everything is fine. Sync is off and it still happens the same.

Like I said, nothing wrong I can see. I DID however notice that the console now says "Error: Can't find profile directory." but that only shows up about a third to a quarter of the time this happens so I don't know what's going on with that or what's going on all the times it doesn't appear.

Looks good.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

What will I do exactly? And how long do I need to do that for before I can determine if the problem is solved? Like I said it seems to be random so I don't know if it would take a few hours or a week for it to pop up again, and I don't know what safe mode would do that would help solve what the problem is.

In Safe Mode, do some surfing, but only at secured web sites.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes). If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.

If I can only visit certain sites and I can't use extensions (like ublock) then I probably wouldn't be using it long enough to see any results (and like I said it happens randomly - it just took 2 days for it to happen again, while before it took only half an hour sometimes), but ok I'll give it a shot if there's no other solution...

I guess while waiting to figure out, what would be the most likely cause if it's not caused by an extension or something? If it is I have a suspicion which it could be (a session saving one though I can't be sure), but if not I guess I should try that first if this doesn't go anywhere.

Well safe mode made my browser freeze up a lot for other reasons so I stopped but still haven't had the problem yet, still are there any settings I should check just in case it returns?

more options

Not unless the original problem returns.

Do you know why?

Well it did just return. Still the same with integrity showing fine.

I'm assuming because ublock origin usually blocks tons of stuff that wasn't being blocked now, causing a lot of problems, plus maybe if any GPU stuff was disabled making it run slower. I couldn't take browsing that way for long enough to see if the problem came back, sorry.

more options

There are several possibilities.

  • An add-on is causing the problem.
  • The bookmarks file is corrupt
  • something is blocking access to the file.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

I doubt it's the latter two considering the randomness of it and how resetting my browser didn't fix it, but I have no idea which addon. I have one called tab session manager that I feel might be the cause if it's an extension, but that's just a guess. I'll turn it off and see if it happens again, but still.

It was an extension called Tab Session Manager by sienori causing the problem

That was very good work. Well Done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem as this can help others with similar problems.
