Installed security update today. Application pretty much wiped out. Just a shell with no data remained. Deleted and downloaded new application. Same problem.

I also tried to download the Beta version. It downloaded with the same result. I also deleted it. At this point I cannot find a way to resurrect Thunderbird and all of the data that was stored in it. The screenshot below is what I see. No data; non of the functions are operational.

Hi In some cases upgrading can lose the location of your profile. There's help for this in Matt's answer here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1276749 Check whether this earlier answer matches your situation. If so the linked blog post has details on the steps to follow. Agnes

The information from Agnes definitely helped some. Thanks. I am starting to understand the profile issue a little now. But I still have not recovered the profile that contains all of my data.

After the update was installed, I now know that the problem was that the profile was not found. Since this did not work, I deleted the updated version of Thunderbird. I then downloaded the current version (68.4.1) from the website. Same result. I deleted it again and downloaded Beta 73, thinking that this might work. Same result. I now assume that the profile was the problem every time.

Once I downloaded Beta73, even though it could not access the profile, the profile was changed. When I tried to run 68.4.1 again I received the message in the image below. So I created a new profile, and now 68.4.1 is up and running but without the data from my original profile. I used the profile manager to select the profile to be used. I can use the new profile, but when I select the original default profile I now get the message "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."

Is there any way I get recover my original profile?

Try deleting the global search file, global-messages-db.sqlite, from your original profile, while TB is closed, and then see if you can load it. If not, create a new profile from TB 68, and click 'Choose Folder..' to Browse to the original profile folder.

It's not recommended to go back and forth between the release version 68 and the beta 73, as TB no longer allows easy access to profiles that have been run with different versions. It's possible to maintain different versions on the same computer, but it requires some care with profiles.

I deleted the search file from the original profile. Started TB and received the msg "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." I had already created a new profile, which works OK. So did either the update or Beta73 wipe out all of my original profile data? Any possibility for getting it back?

Just stay with the version and profile that works. Data from the other profiles can be copied in:

Thanks for all the help. I now know a lot more about TB than I ever wanted to know. I was able to drill down through the profile files and open the address book files only to find that my original address book no longer exists. I am not sure why, but the problem began when I clicked the "install update now" button. Thanks to all.
