Why can't I update Thunderbird on Mac

I have Thunderbird 60.9.1 and would like to update to the latest 68.3. I can download that version, but I would much rather have it do the Thunderbird system. One problem. Everytime I try to run the update it fails, in multiple venues. I have tried changing the password on the AT&T SBCGlobal server system and that did not work. I also updated the security update for this version of Mac OS (which is 10.14.6) Nothing seems to work. I have posted the error message, I don't know what to do .

This is an additional place where I tried to update. As you can see, it is also showing the update failed.

I have this problem on my iMac running Catalina....update fails every time.

Is Thunderbird correctly installed, i.e. you are not running it from the dmg file ??

Hi Wayne, Yep I think so....I've been using the previous version (60.9.1) for 18months or so on the Mac. I suppose I could install another version over the top of the existing version but I'm concerned about conflicting versions and losing data.
