I have upgraded to Windows 10. I downloaded TB and went through the normal account set up and my IMAP files downloaded as expected. As I couldn't get access to my former Local Folders at one stage I uninstalled then re-installed TB. Account set-up went as before but now I get an error message "Unable to log-in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." All have been repeatedly checked to no avail. I have deleted the account and tried to re-establish it without success. What can I do ?

Thank you - and sorry for wasting your time. I discovered that the real problem was that after the initial account set up I was incorrectly identifying my server as IMAP instead of POP3 !!!

However, I still have a problem in that despite overwriting the Thunderbird folder in Roaming with the pre W10 preserved data I still can't see my contacts. My Address Book is empty. Can you help ?

When you uninstalled and reinstalled, the profile folder with your account should have been retained, unless you checked the box during uninstall to remove it. Probably best to create a new profile with Profile Manager and add your accounts. To start PM, close TB, Winkey+R, type

thunderbird.exe -p

This won't affect existing profiles, if any, and you can always open them via PM and also transfer data to the new profile if necessary.

Look for abook.mab (Personal Address Book) and history.mab (Collected Addresses) in the other profile folders, or backup, and copy them into the current profile folder, while TB is closed. The profile folder(s) is located in the Profiles folder:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles

AppData is hidden by default.

Thanks again. All is resolved. I am posting this story to help you and others if you encounter something similar again.

Rather than finding individual .mab files I decided to look at whether I could simply change the profile in use. There were 5 profile folders under Profiles, 4 with "default" in the name. Using the Help/Troubleshooting route I could determine that the one in use was A when the one I thought was probably right (based on the Local Folders contained) was B. I closed TB and used the Profile Manager intending to select B as the relevant folder.

Profile Manager showed me only B - no sign of A, C, D or E. So I exited it without taking any action. And to my surprise, on restarting TB all folders and addresses had reverted to their previous state.

I am having the same 'probably wrong config....etc message. IMAP used. Good name and password. Created new profile but have no idea how to link this to a file or program or how (or should) I overwrite the profiles? How do I locate them anyway?
