How can I export/backup my logins?

more options

I want a backup stored locally in case of any issues with storing the passwords in the cloud, in case my account closes, is hijacked, or if I accidentally delete a login.

If I backup the whole profile, it'll just sync again and I'll be in the same situation.

Ideally I'd want to export to plain text. How can I do this?

Hi Antony, I don't think Firefox has a built-in export function, even with the change to the Lockwise interface.

File Backup

One option to back up your saved logins would be to copy a pair of files from time to time. Those files are:

  • logins.json
  • key4.db

Those files are stored in your currently active Firefox profile folder. These articles describe how to find that folder and what it contains. On the receiving Firefox, you'll want to exit out before replacing in-use files.

Historically, users have relied on one of these:

If there's something new out there, I don't know about it yet.

The data is encrypted, how can I use it to add the logins to my newly created email account?

The data in logins.json is encrypted. In order to use it in Firefox, you need the companion key4.db file. Then Firefox will decrypt the passwords and you can view them on the Lockwise page. (If a Master Password was used, you'll also need to enter that.)

Third party programs might be able to decrypt the passwords without key4.db, but I don't have any experience with such tools.
