When I open old messages I just get the "Welcome to Thunderbird" page instead of the message content.
I've been using Thunderbird for years, currently on a Win 10 64-bit machine, and I am using version 60.9.0 (32-bit). It appears to be working normally for new messages - but when I try to open a message from a few years back, although the search facility shows the opening text OK, when I actually open the window I get the "Welcome to Thunderbird" page where the message content should be. I'd like to fix this now before I really need to open an old message!

Are you talking about a message in a POP account folder or IMAP account folder or 'Local Folders' mail account ?
Does this occur on any older message ? Do those older messages reside in a particular folder?
Disable this:
- Menu icon > Options > Options > General
- uncheck checkbox : 'when thunderbird launches show the start page in Message area'
- click on OK
Rebuild the global database. See instructions:
Check to see if selected message now appears.
