N key randomly deletes emails

I posted about this years ago, with no response. The issue has persisted through many versions of Thunderbird, several iMacs, and all versions of OSX. Using the N key to move to the next unread message randomly deletes the email I was on when I tap it. Sometimes the email goes to Trash, and I am able to recover it. Sometimes it poofs altogether, though it is still on the Gmail server - a good reason for me to stick with POP. It doesn't happen every time, but at least several times a day.

In the past, I've been able to remap the keys, using Command-U to advance to the next unread message, and that has taken care of the problem. However, with 68.1.1, that no longer works. Though the reassigned keys show up, they don't work - N is the only key that will advance to the next unread message.

Help?
