I use Windows 10 Pro and Tbird ver. 68.1.0 (64-bit). Help> About Tbird says I'm up to date yet every morning I get a small window that asks me if I would like to update Tbird. Why is this if I'm up-to-date? Second, I tried the update and the update opened as a new install w/o incorporating anything such as my existing sent messages, trash, contacts and most importantly my local folders. How best to handle this if in fact it really is a update?

Thanks.

Download the full installer from https://www.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/all/ and run it. This will update your existing installation to the latest release version.

TB 68.2 was released yesterday for autoupdate from earlier versions of 68 and also TB 60, so the notification you received is a valid one. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/68.2.0/releasenotes/

Yes ! Thanks ! You are right ! However, thunderbird does not update automatically. I had to install this version manually. Maybe it's normal for this version. Later we shall see.

It is a good thing that I am being sent emails for activity, as I would of not found out about the version release. I also had to manually update as well, clicking on help/about does NOT show any available updates from 68.1.2 64 bit. I also had to install twice as the link for downloading is the 32 bit version. Good thing I read a post that had a direct link to file depository, as I was able to navigate to the 68.2 64 bit and download it. It would be very nice if you added the option in the installer for 32/64 bit so a person would not have to hunt up the correct version.

I updated from 68.1.2 to 68.2 from Help/About, as I had earlier updated from 60.9 to 68, but this option is not expected to initially be available to all users - it's a phased deployment.

I agree the confusion between 32 and 64 bit Windows versions and sketchy updates points to a release management process that is not yet fully refined (to put it mildly).

The page is nice, but it would be MUCH easier to have only one installer per os/language option, and the installer's 1st question would ask 32/64 bit install.....

I installed the 68.2.0 version, and now I got this message on every startup : "You have launched an older version of Thunderbird", even I check "Don't ask at startup" in profile manager.

That's hard to explain. The error is expected if you e.g. run TB 60 on a profile that was created or modified by TB 68. But not if you're running TB 68. I suggest you check that your startup shortcut isn't pointing to a TB 60 installation, in either Program Files (x86) for the 32-bit version, or Program Files for the 64-bit version.

Thanks ! You right ! Both versions (64 and 32) where installed. Would this be the cause of the initial problem of this topic?

Hard to say - it's possible to have the 32-bit and 64-bit versions installed at the same time, but it requires some care to manage their profiles and update paths. Then there is the issue of sharing profiles between TB 60 and 68.

My advice is to stay with the 32-bit TB 60 until it is autoupdated to 68, and to stay with 32-bit until 32-bit is automatically migrated to 64-bit. New users with no previous installation of TB should install 32-bit TB 68.

I have only the 64 bit 68.2 installed ATM, and still am getting the upgrade pop up notice. I did remove Thuderbird completely after backing up user data. I then downloaded the 64 bit exe installer directly from the file repository. Installed, and recovered user data. So far the upgrade notice popped up twice.

If you are still getting update notifications after deleting the files and folder in Program Data\Mozilla\updates, this may be specific to the 64-bit version. I have the 32-bit release and beta versions, and have never seen a spurious notification.

I am on TB 68.2.1 and have the same issue. As I did not find this thread I did open a new one at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1271866. It seems the problem is still not solved in the latest rev. I would appreciate if someone could tell what checks TB does to evaluate if there are updates. I don't see uninstalling and re-installing everything from scratch as a good solution because it means that the real cause is not found and there is no guarantee that the problem will be gone afterwards.

Agree, because I have done just exactly what you just described, and pop up still persists..

1) Going to help/about only shows what version you have and checking the new update flag does not work as it can be wrong. I have had this happen where it said TB was up to date on the about pop-up, but upon manually verifying it was not.

2) Doing it manually by navigating to RELEASES to confirm whether update is needed/available is the best way at the moment.

I wanted to add this tidbit of information to the discussion. My wife and I have identical computers which are now about 2 months old. We transferred our Tbird app and data from the old computers to the new ones using an app called PC MOVER. I'm thinking that this is the reason why she has the 32 bit version of Tbird and I have the 64 bit. I get the update message everyday because I haven't had the time to try any of the recommended solutions. My wife has never gotten the update message so therefore a possible solution is to switch to the 32 bit version. (She uses 60.9.1, 32 bit and I use 68.1.1 64 bit)

Are either of you running Kaspersky??

Yes I'm using Kaspersky. I thought of the same thing when Kaspersky updated my Thunderbird. The problem could come from the software update via Kaspersky. It also caused me problems with the update of Dropbox. I think it's better to avoid updating via Kaspersky.

I am on kaspersky internet security 19 but I never updated TB through kaspersky. The message about the update comes from TB itself as shown in the screen shot in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1271866. It pops up below the title bar within the TB window whereas update notifications from kaspersky pop up in a kaspersky notification window. The problem is still there with TB 68.2.2

Not everyone is able to sort this problem out not being computer literate to follow technical instructions, I am on the latest version. It is obvious that this is an issue that developers need to resolve as many are effected by this.

Just a quick question. Sorry if it's a bit off topic. Did any of you have a problem with DroBox after an update from Kaspersky? (preferences reset, ask for a password again, start to resync all files again). If so, I will inform DropBox support.
