Are you using Windows OS ? Is computer 64bit ? What version of Thunderbird are you using? Is it 68? Did you download win64 version or win32 version ?

Assuming Windows OS, What do you see in this location: C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\'Profiles' folder? How many profile name folders do you see ? You might need to make hidden files and folders visible. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

If you see two profile names eg: one might end with .default (original profile) and the other .default release (new profile that TB currently sees) If you downloaded win64 bit version, uninstall win64 bit version of Thunderbird and download the win32 bit version.

re : I believe located 'Profile' files but only shows the new Profile and would seem has overwritten my previous Profile file.

Assuming old and new profile names do exist. Reinstalling version win32 68 should locate old profile. However, if you really want to keep using win64 bit version, then please send me the information as set out below and I'll tell you how to fix it.

Exit Thunderbird. Access: C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird folder.

Open 'profiles.ini' file using Notepad. Copy everything and paste info into this forum question.

Open 'installs.ini' file using Notepad. Copy everything and paste info into this forum question - but put it in a separate reply so the two results do not confuse anyone - eg: me :)

Hi Toad-Hall Thanks for responding - info response Windows 10 Thunderbird v68.1.0 (32-bit) 64 Bit computer Uuuum .....maybe that's part of the problem TB 32 bit & computer 64Bit ???? Don't recall the opportunity to select 32bit or 64bit for TB when I upgraded.

I can see 2 Profile folders at C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird 2mn8f5eo.default dated 06/09 (day of upgrade) dgz213m7.default-release dated 13/09 (today) Neither showing date prior to upgrade means no previous version available, I guess ???

Can't locate a folder 'profiles.ini'

Where do I go from here please

Thanks nick NB: 'Open 'profiles.ini' file using Notepad' - Not sure how you open a file that way but couldn't find via usual search methods

Using win32 on 64bit is not a problem.

re :Can't locate a folder 'profiles.ini' both 'profiles.ini' and 'installs.ini' are in the Roaming/'Thunderbird' folder. Maybe your computer is not showing the extensions? See image below

click on pop mail account name folder do you see mbox files (no extention) that have the same names as the folders ? do they have a good size ? Post an image showing contents of the pop mail account name folder

No 'POP' or any other folder just a single file I can't open that says: times.json

just to give a bit of background - this TB upgrade occurred whilst I was having trouble with Plusnet (Force9) who were insisting it was my responsibility to clear down their email server (Webmail) because I was close to my allowed email capacity despite the fact that I had TB set to delete all my emails on their server after 75 days. They had emails on there that were older, so clearly TB and Webmail were not in sync with my TB setting.

Plusnet still claim it's my responsibility and I say it's not my fault their Webmail is not working correctly and that I should use someone else for my email provider rather than them.

I've been with them around 13 years and this issue has raised it's head quite regularly over the last few years and they've always previously accepted the fault is with their outdated Webmail not deleting after the set period, until now.

This all likely to be a 'Red Herring' but gives background to what was going on at the time.

re :No 'POP' or any other folder just a single file I can't open that says: times.json That does not sound correct . Are you absolutely sure that your 2mn8f5eo.default folder really is empty with exception of 'times.json' file? 'times.json' should be in the profile name folder and there should be plenty more files including the 'Mail' folder. uninstalling and installing thunderbird is only the program, it does not effect your profile folders. So something else must have occurred if those files are missing. In my default profile it has a load of files: see first image as example

Did you use pop mail accounts ..if yes... In my default profile name folder, there is a 'Mail' folder and it contains Local Folders and all pop mail accounts plus a smart mailboxes folder. See second image as example

If you really have nothing in the '2mn8f5eo.default' folder except 'times.json' then it really is up the creek and useless.

re :Plusnet (Force9) who were insisting it was my responsibility to clear down their email server (Webmail) because I was close to my allowed email capacity They are correct because if you use up your quota then the server cannot accept new emails sent to you as there is no space.

Are you saying there are a load of emails still on the server which you access webmail account via a browser? If yes, then do not delete them just yet because you can download them again before clearing some off the server. Are all the emails in the server 'Inbox' folder? If yes, then that is ok.

Do you have a backup copy of the '2mn8f5eo.default' folder ?

If no: Start Thunderbird. Help > Troubleshooting Information In the 'Applications Basics' section, look at bottom of list and click on 'about:profiles' click on 'Create a new profile' click on 'Next' Give profile a name or leave it as is and new name will be 'Default User' Click on 'Finish'

that new default profile is auto created and should have all the files required. You will see it listed in the 'about:profiles' tab after the other profiles. It will say 'Default Profile' and should say 'yes', but if it does not then click on 'set as default profile' to set as default

click on 'Launch profile in a new browser' Do not worry, it doesn't launch in a browser, they just have to fix the label on the button so it says window.

Now close the original Thunderbird window. Create a new existing pop mail account so it connects to the plusnet server. Then check all the Account Settings > Server Settings etc to make sure they are set up as you require. Finally, click on 'Get Messages' to download everything from server Inbox.

Afraid that is the only file showing in the folder.

Plusnet's server has some 6k emails dating back to April 2019 (which they want me to clear). 95% probably, are just the usual dross, so even if I recreated my TB emails, it would take forever to sort through to pick out the ones worth keeping plus would not help me get my emails dating back years in some cases or my contacts/address book/folders.

Any other ideas I do appreciate your help - Thanks

If you do not have a backup then the advise given is your only course of action to retieve some emails.

Assuming your Account Settings have been set up to 'Leave messages on server' and 'Until I delete them':

After deleting a batch: Right click on Inbox and select 'compact'. This is important.

Repeat the action of compacting after deleting a load of emails. Compacting actually removes the hidden but marked as deleted emails from the Inbox. Later, check the server to see if emails have been deleted.

It's pretty clear that 68.1.0 involves 32bit vs 64bit. But I don't see why that would have deleted contents of the existing default profile.

@reporter, visit Help > About. Does it say 64bit for 68.1.0?

And how did you actually update, and from what version? (because I can pretty much guarantee you that Thunderbird didn't download this update.)

Matt, have you seen examples of default profile corruption?

p.s. do you have anything like CCleaner installed? And what antivirus software do you run?

Apologies to Toad-Hall been dealing with other problems/appts.

Hi Wayne

My update was prompted by usual msg from TB. Followed prompt but kept asking for a restart to complete upgrade to v68 - did this 7 times and gave up. Advised to uninstall current TB and reinstall which was successful except lost my 'Profile' files which were overwritten(?) and only Profile Files date from this new install are visible.

I have Windows Security Anti-Virus and Adaware Yes I have CCleaner

Dropping in here very later, and there has been a lot written. I have skimmed, but not read in depth.

Have you tried going to the About profiles link in Troubleshooting information (last entry in the application basics block) and changing the selected profile to your "old" profile and making it default.

Note Changing profiles, as long as you don't click the remove button, just loads a different profile with Thunderbird. If you have more than two use the "Launch profile in a new browser" button to launch another instance of Thunderbird with that profile loaded to see if it is the profile you want to be default.

Hi Matt

Can't see 'old profile' here's what I can see:

Profile: default-release This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted. Default Profile yes Root Directory C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\dgz213m7.default-release Local Directory C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\dgz213m7.default-release Profile: default Default Profile no Root Directory C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\2mn8f5eo.default Local Directory C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\2mn8f5eo.default

I should add that these appear to be the same x2 previously reported 'Profiles' that could be found nick

Below this should be a 'Set as default' button to choose that '2mn8f5eo.default' profile to see what it contains.
