I've already gone under import and backup and there's nothing under restore. My account has always been logged in and syncing I've never signed out so why is there nothing here? I need to restore a backup from August 22 around 8pm. Please help I had a lot of folders and bookmarks.

Hi Dragalojas,

I understand you're having issues with your previous bookmarks after a fresh installation of Windows 10.

Do you just see the default set of Bookmarks?

It might be possible you created another profile alongside your older one with the installation of Windows 10.

You could always check by following these steps :

  1. Type about:profiles into the Firefox address bar and press Enter.
  2. This will list the profiles available with the profile in current use listed as, This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.
  3. You can switch profiles (if optional) by selecting set as default profile.

Hope this helps!

Hi thanks for you reply. I assume you mean 'about:profiles'? 'about:config' brings up a lot of options and I couldn't find anything obvious for profile.

I've tried switching profiles from 'default-release' to 'default' but there is still nothing available for either profile even under restore. How can it all just disappear? Is there no way to restore latest backup from the server?

Hi Dragalojas,

Are you logged into the right Firefox account? Just in-case you accidentally created a new one on your Windows Installation.

Sorry for the mistake, I did mean 'about:profiles' instead of 'about:config', my bad!

It's definitely the right account with my email address, and I did not create a new one. When I go under Manage Account and then Devices & apps, when I click show I can see my old device (before reinstallation) which says last synchronised 4 days ago and gives the option to Disconnect...

What about any other devices connected to that Sync Account? Do those appear at Manage Account? If you say there are no other devices connected - that is a misuse of Sync. It was never intended to be used in lieu of a "real backup"!

First, those "backup and restore" menu items are solely for data that is stored in your Firefox installation, which is empty now with the fresh installation of Windows 10.

Also, Sync is not a "cloud service" as used by other applications. It is a closed encrypted service solely for Firefox that transfers encrypted data to and from the server; data that can't be read by any application other than Firefox. That data is considered a "blob".

And referring to Sync with regards to "backups" is incorrect; the data encryption used to protect your data from anyone except for you makes that data almost useless outside of Firefox.

Sync does not store any "backups"; there is one set of data sitting on the Sync server for your account.

With that fresh installation of Windows 10, did you sign in to Sync? That fresh installation would appear as a new device.

Did you have any problem with signing in to your Firefox Account (FxA) to connect to Sync? For instance, should you have a problem signing in to Sync, resetting the Password is the wrong thing to do! Too many users have reported that they reset their Firefox Account (FxA), either missing the warning message or ignoring that message; and they managed to wipe all their data from the Sync server. That is a fatal user mistake.

Assuming that you used Sync with other devices ...

If when you connect that "new device" to your FxA and after waiting a few hours none of your data makes its way from the Sync server to your "new device" - STOP and disconnect that device from FxA.

With other connected devices on that FxA you would then open another device where that FxA is connected; that would retrieve your data from that device to populate your account on the Sync server so that data can make its way to the "new device".

Thanks for your time. Please see attached all the devices that are connected to my account. The first 2 are 'default-release' and 'default' (current 2 profiles available). The 4th and 5th is my same device but old installations of Windows 10. The 3rd is my phone on which I've just realised there is a desktop bookmarks option and all my bookmarks seem to be there. How do I get them!?

Also whats the best way to back it up so I can keep as a restore point and also retrieve to my desktop?

To answer your question I signed in immediately to my account I did not reset the password or anything as I did not have any problems logging in. I just signed in with my details on 1st attempt and it sent an email to my email address from which I clicked 'confirm sign in'.
