[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

Hi Iain, have you already done a normal Windows shutdown and restart to release file locks and complete any pending updates?

I noticed the problem after powering up this morning. Firefox auto-loaded but was incomplete after its update. A few minutes ago I shut down and restarted. Firefox still shows no history prior to today. It now lets me import saved bookmarks, so I have done so. There are still no saved ids/passwords for website access. Anything else I can try?

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

Type about:profiles<enter> in the address bar. How many profiles are listed? How many should be there? Also, open the folder in your file explorer.

The most recent date in the Old Firefox folder is 06/03/2019 (i.e. 6 March). I have two profiles: default-release and default.

Note that this is a rather new places.sqlite:

Table moz_inputhistory has 0 records
Table moz_bookmarks has 12 records

You can check the profile folder if you have a places.sqlite.corrupt file.

If you lost personal data then it is possible that a new default-release profile folder has been created. See "Determine if Firefox has created a new profile":

You can open the about:profiles page via the location bar to check whether multiple profiles are present and what profile Firefox currently is using.

Firefox 67 and later can use a dedicated profile for each of the Firefox update channels and will lock the profile, so it can only be used by Firefox in a specific installation folder. For Release versions this profile would be a xxxxxxxx.default-release profile, profiles used in older Firefox versions usually used a xxxxxxxx.default profile (a refresh adds a time stamp).

The profile in use is 5w8oc68r.default-release. The other profile, vakoi49f.default, only contains a couple of documents. There is no places.sqlite.corrupt folder inside 5w8oc68r.default-release. There is a bookmarksbackups folder inside 5w8oc68r.default-release, but this was created at 12:30 today when I imported my back-up file.

No change to anything today. I don't need history, so am just ignoring that piece. I've reinstated bookmarks, so that's functioning ok. I've manually rekeyed ids and passwords to my most frequently used sites. Problem still unresolved though; would be good to hear that somebody's sussed what went wrong and can fix it prior to next release!

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.{web link} I use an add-on that makes backups of my user profile, Just In Case. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: In case you need to restore from these backups, you may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.

Yes, I can do all that, but it would be nicer if the release package didn't screw up in the first place!
